Baby Carrots Recalled from TJ's, Ralph's

Just one more reason to start buying your carrots at your farmer's market: NBC11.com and the Los Angeles Times are reporting that The Los Angeles Salad Company is recalling two brands of pre-packaged baby carrots because they might be contaminated with a bacteria called shigella. The symptoms sound like a pants-load of fun: vomiting, diarrhea, bloody poops, etc. Although no cases of sickness have been reported yet in California, the carrots are being sold at SoCal Trader Joe's and Ralph's markets.

From NBC11:

The "Los Angeles Salad" carrots are available in 7- and 8-ounce bags with a sell-by date of Aug. 16. The "Trader Joe's" carrots are in 7-ounce bags with a sell-by date of Aug. 8.

The company has put up a press release over at their website with more information about the recall: "Consumers who have purchased Los Angeles Salad Company’s 'Genuine Sweet Baby Carrots' are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund, Consumers with questions may contact Los Angeles Salad [at] 626-322-9017."

Interesting...the same company had their baby carrots pulled in Quebec a week ago. I wonder why it took so long for the problem to be reported here? - CH

so it has a sell by date of over a week ago and people still eat this stuff? if they won't sell it after that date, i sure won't eat it after that date.

what's the guarantee that the carrots bought at a farmer's market are going to be any safer?

and you're surely never going to hear about any recall that may/should happen to farmers market carrots.

Of course there's no guarantee, but the mass production and distribution of food that is currently practiced in this country (I call it agri-industry instead of agri-culture) on large farms like these has facilitated an increase in the spread of contaminated food - why do you think China is also experiencing all these food recalls as well? (Using the Socratic method here, gang.)

If you would like me to elaborate further on these practices or you want more information on the benefits of buying local, either email me offline or, um, read the NYT, read Michael Pollan, read blogs like Mulch and Gristmill...you get my drift. Read up on these issues before you make blanket statements or unverifiable claims.

Also: ANONYMOUS COMMENTERS ARE DOUCHEBAGS WHO DESERVE YUCKY POOPS! hahahahaha, I'm an asshole.

What are you 5 Carrie? Grow up or have a carrot. We are guest/anon because it's a pain to register.

By the way I agree with you, faceless is no way to handle/run a food co, but you are being a bit snotty here. That guest has a differing viewpoint. Big deal.
