Box Office Review: Superbad Supergood!

Jonah Hill and Michael Cera

Exceeding even the most optimistic of expectations, Superbad hauled in a huge 33.1 million dollars to top the box office this weekend. Seth Rogen can do no wrong right now. The terrible, awful, unfunny Rush Hour 3 dipped precipitously in its second weekend, pulling in 21.8 million and bringing its total to 88.1M. The Bourne Ultimatum stayed strong in its third week, finishing third at 18.9 million and now standing at 163.8M. The Simpsons Movie continued to hang on with 6.6 million and a new cume of 165.1M.

The Invasion basically closed before it opened, limping in with 6 million dollars. After that, it was Stardust (5.2M/19M), Hairspray (4.2M/100.5M), Underdog (3.6M/31.6M), Phoenix (3.5M/278.6M) and Chuck and Larry (3.5M, 110.3M). The Last Legion opened fairly wide (2,002 theaters), but did nothing (2.5M). Death at a Funeral did okay, opening with 1.3 million in 260 theaters. Two new docs, The 11th Hour and The King of Kong, both debuted to brisk business, averaging $14,000 and $10,060, respectively, in a handful of venues.

It's so nice when they let the guys/people who are actually FUNNY write and control the movies as opposed to studio development twits who put out the same old schtick.

Nice, damn funny .....and profitable

Studios - please LEARN FROM THIS!!!

so, so, so balls-to-the-wall funny. my lady friend didn't dig it as much as i did, but i nearly lost it at many points. McLovin is my hero.

Speaking of which, did you guys see the McLovin T-shirt yet? I saw it on GearCrave.com, here:
http://www.gearcrave.com/2007/08/20/be-the-first-mclovin-on-the-block-the-superbad-t-shirt/

I have mixed feelings about Superbad. It was 95 percent more funny than every other comedy but it still felt like it didn't live up to it's potential. The scenes with McLovin and the cops felt tacked on and unnecessary and the McLovin gag itself kept getting repeated over and over until it felt very tired.

Michael Cera made the movie for me, but without him, this would have felt like an overlong R-rated episode of "Freaks and Geeks."

Best part of Superbad was the drawings... Anyone know how many artists they got to contribute?

I knew this was genuinely extra-funny when I found myself hushing my own laughter so I wouldn't miss the next gag. Great shit, Apatow!

my throat hurt from laughing so hard when i saw this movie last night
