Maniacs - I loved "Don't Talk" - such a brilliant band.

I'm glad that laist is highlighting LA's history, too many people gloss over any cultural item other than film here. Sure, it's more a reflection of their expectations than of our limitations, but still...it's nice to remind people.

And dammit, I wish we still had the red cars! To have lost such a wide ranging transit option in such a short time! Grrrrrr.....

LA is the loneliest and most brutal of American cities - yes I think of this quote every time I watch The Hills. Every time I see one of those parties at Les Deux I think of the Taxi Driver quote - "Sick, venal. Someday a real rain will come and wash this scum off the streets." Side note: though set in NY, Taxi Driver was written while Schrader was living in his car on the streets of LA.

Great post.

10,000 Maniacs and Natalie Merchant definitely changed my life. Remember 'Whats the matter here?...beautiful

I too wonder about what the 17 year olds of today listen to, and how it will shape them...again, great post.

In college on the east coast, I connected to him via "Kerouac" by Willie Alexander and the Boom Boom Band, thinking less of the L.A. connection and more of Kerouac's roots in Lowell, MA.
