Bukowski in LA, LA in Bukowski. The man was quintessential LA and our fair city informed every word, every rant, every foul-mouthed rush of brilliance that he created. In honor of Bukowski's birthday, Nobody Reads in LA will be reading from his novel Post Office. The ranting kicks-off at Charlie O's Bar in the Alexandria Hotel tonight @ 7pm. In true Buk style, drinks are served until 2am.
If you can't make it out to the bar tonight, the equally inventive and zany-but-brilliant Scoops is offering a selection of flavors inspired by Bukowski through Saturday. There might be bacon involved! Possibly ham, perhaps rye. A scoop of Chinaski and cherries?
If chinaski cream is not your thing, you could take Esotouric's "Haunts of a Dirty Old Man" bus tour to see Bukowski's favorite haunts, including Musso & Frank. Tours start tomorrow on Buk's official birthday.
If your schedule is simply too full, you can celebrate Buk in other ways. Watch John Dullaghan's delicious documentary Bukowski: Born Into This to get a complete sense of the man and to see great footage of LA.
Or you could pick a day, get drunk and start writing poems at 3 a.m. Or you could just read them. Loudly. While asking people around you to shut the hell up.

Bukowski was born on August 16th. No longer fact checking stuff...?
That's why we mentioned in our post, that the bus tour "starts tomorrow on Buk's official birthday."
The other event takes place tonight, as they and Scoop are celebrating Bukowski week.
That photo is Gold! Dang if Charles doesn't appear to have just come from the 99'er and appears to be waiting for the No. 4 bus.
It doesn't really look like him all that much...
Great article -- and thanks for the kind words on the film. But that photo is not Bukowski -- although there is certainly a resemblance. John Dullaghan, Director, "Bukowski: Born into This"
John -- Wow, very honored to meet you via comments. Your film is wonderful and really gives a broader sense of Bukowski the man...beyond the cliches of just his ranting and raving that so many know about. I recommend it to people all the time. As your first (please don't tell me last?) film, it was even more impressive. Any other documentaries from you we should be on the lookout for?
As for the photo, ah, we SO wanted it to be him, and it does, to us, have a resemblance - even after watching your film six times! The photo has been changed. Thanks for the timely tip!
Sigh to my comment (No. 3). Looks like I was totally fished in.
I know! Sorry. I thought it was "gold" as well, which is why I went with it. I, too, thought it was charming that he was coming from the 99'er and waiting for the bus. Alas, I was also fished in.
Buk embodied the spirit of San Pedro.
coincidentally tomorrow is madonna's birthday too.
