This Week in Classical Picks: Steven Schmidt & Tonoi Ensemble

Violin & Sheet Music

Steven Schmidt

We've told you about the Sundays Live tradition stemming from 1948 here in Los Angeles before, but we'll tell you again: this is essential LA. 1) It's at LACMA. 2) It's Free. 3) It's Quality.

Tonight, they present percussionist Steven Schmidt alongside Mládí, the conductor-less chamber orchestra known for their concerts at the historically famous Los Altos Apartments in Wilshire Center. The diverse program includes Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů, Schmidt's own Images II for clarinet and percussion and Sextet for string quartet and two horns by Beethoven.

Tonight - August 12, 2007 @ 6:00PM
LACMA - Leo S. Bing Theater
5905 Wilshire Blvd.

Tonoi Ensemble & The Midnight Winds

New music and cutting-edge is the name of the game here with some fresh programming. The SoCal based Tonoi Ensemble, who are part of The Definiens Project, is joining forces with the USC-born Midnight Winds. That's a lot of new input, we know. Just get ready to hear Seduction Dance for flute, oboe, and piano by Miguel del Aguila, Gounod's Petite Symphonie, Brooklyn based experimental composer Eric Schwartz' Ghost Jewels and Difficult Nomenclatures and of 1960's Polish avant-garde fame (and now some Hollywood film scores), Wojciech Kilar's Quintet for winds.

The concert next week is $15.00, or $7.50 if you buy tickets through Gold Star Events.

Sunday, August 19, 2007 - 3:00PM
St. James Episcopal Church
1325 Monterey Rd
South Pasadena CA
