CD Review: The Shout Out Louds 'Tonight I Have To Leave It' EP

Artist: The Shout Out Louds
Album: Tonight I Have To Leave It (EP)
Release Date: July 2007
Label: Merge Records

If you missed the Shout Out Louds at the El Rey during their whirlwind pass through LA in mid-July you should definitely check out the EP they were touring to support. Basically the release is a glorified CD single with 3 versions of 'Tonight I Have To Leave It' (including a Russian Futurists remix, sadly repetitive, and a Kleerup remix which was a pretty darn good technoification of the tune). But wait, there's more: two other tracks on the EP are 'Don't Get Yourself Involved' which existing Shout Out Louds fans will enjoy but wasn't a groundbreaker for me, and a really fantastic Pogues cover, 'Streams of Whiskey'. Between the title track and the Pogues cover I was really enamoured by the group of Swedes.

'Tonight I Have To Leave It' (video featured above) is very reminiscent of the Cure's 'In Between Days' with some crazy cowbell/bottle rhythm track setting it apart. These guys seem like a lot of fun, I will definitely check out their album, Our Ill Wills, when it comes out in September and I will be on top of reporting when they hit LA during their October tour. In the meantime, I highly recommend the EP as a holdover.

Pshh, I already have Our Ill Wills and I love it. This should've been released earlier as it's a real "summer album." It's already out in Europe.

I hate to be a kill-joy but that song is WAY too much like The Cure. When I first heard it on the radio, my reaction was "Are they kidding??"

The drum fill is very very like 'In Between Days' but the bridge is very different as are their other songs. I don't think it's a bad thing to have a track that sounds like a neo-classic's just as long as they all don't sound the same.

Hmm... I could just be irritated because I just saw The Mighty One Ninety last week and they played a song that sounded exactly like "Pictures of You."
