Foodie Round-up: Top Chef, Wat Thai, and Delicious Deals

- Okay, first on my list are the $42 nine-course tasting menu at Tagine, cheap but tasty Belizean rum, and a cabeza taco at Taqueria Chihuahua: the LA Times shares some of the best dining deals in the city.
- Jonathan Gold's been on a Korean kick lately over at the LA Weekly: this week he discovers the best fried chicken in K-town, if not the city, and last week he spent time with a former Korean soap star who makes a killer squid bulgogi.
- New food website obsession: Cookthink. They ask "what are you craving?" but really it's better for "what do you have in your fridge that needs to be used before it goes bad?" like the broccoli-potato soup I made the other night.
- The New York Times analyzes some of the complexities of eating local: perhaps companies should start putting carbon footprint data on labels along with nutritional information?
- Okay, so here's the Top Chef update: Dale won the quick-fire challenge (making Coldstone-style ice cream); Tre won the elimination challenge with his bacon-wrapped shrimp with grits (CHEATER bacon always wins). Sara N. got eliminated because she is slow and unhelpful. Also, Tony Bourdain is blogging for Bravo now, and naturally it is amazing and hilarious and I love him.
- The Militant Angeleno has some details on the closing of Wat Thai's food stalls; the Chowhounders are on it as well.
- Well, we didn't want to have sex with you anyway, Vegetable Breath: vegans now swearing
off sex with meat-eaters. - This Week in SUPER DEPRESSINGNESS: kids think food in a McDonald's wrapper tastes better. Those fucking Happy Meals are ruining generations of palates.

I usta live on Hartford Ave at 7th, in the mid-1990s, and I was there on that Turkey day when Dick Riordan showed up in person (lemme tell ya: when an angry punk-rock scotsman small publisher is confronted by a drunken irish mayor on a Sunday, when the allegedly convict-staffed latter entity, the result is one that even gary Leonard allows to be photographed!) to make the "Health" Department take down that "F" grade sign.
Oh, for you newbies on L.A.: Dick owns The Pantry. It was also the site of the flash-point of the DNC 2K (I moved back to NYC shortly after that fiasco, and even received a fair amount of settlement from the LAPD for having been shot there at Fig & Olympic.) THAT, is why I whine.
As for vegans eschewing meat-eaters for hiding the sausage: PLEASE! This shit was going on in ORANGE COUNTY in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Back when Sublime, Pestilence, Offspring, Mindrot, No Doubt (and John Pantelle Productions) and loads of other bands that yer parents did not know existed when Taft Avenue and Doctor Dream Records was in vogue, there was a whole world happening. And within that world were people situating what they would fuck, according to what others ate.
