Oh, and Elise...I've added a link to the part about the Flower Market that includes hours. It's 6am or 8am most days for the public, but as early as 2am for wholesalers. Closes down at Noon.

as much as i love angelique, their service is terrible. i live a few blocks up on 6th and main, and as much as i love their crepes and french onion soup, i don't know if it is worth waiting 20 minutes for a server to come over and take our order. however on one occassion recently the service was quick, but that may have been a fluke.

polaroid girl: they still sell them. I spend most of my time convincing my roommate that I will not allow her to get a turtle because of how dang big those suckers get (with proper care, of course.) And then she tells me we can't keep a bunny in the closet...

I bought my pet turtle, a red ear slider, in Santee Alley for $5. Not sure if they still sell them since it was years ago and it's quite illegal (I later found out that turtles smaller than a certain size cannot be sold in pet stores because they carry salmonella and they're small enough for little kids to put in their mouths). If you purchase a turtle downtown, make sure to go to an Aquarium store to get the proper food and supplies. What they give you when you buy the turtle is a death sentence otherwise (they gave me turtle chow for a full grown animal that was bigger than my hatching's head!). In cae your wondering, I bought "Boy" in 1998 or 99 and he's now HUGE!

How do you know the Latinos in the "Middle Eastern bazaar" are all Mexicans? And even if they were, there are similar marketplaces found in the larger cities of Mexico. In fact, bazaar-type open-air marketplaces are common sights in the Third World. GET CULTURED, MAN! Fred Camino: The Militant always takes transit to the Fashion District as its one of the most frustrating places to park anyway. The Militant actually recommends taking the Red/Purple/Blue (M) to 7MC (That's Militant shorthand for "7th Street Metro Center") and crossing the street to catch the DASH in front of Macy's Plaza which takes you straight to the FD.

that was a terrific little bit of writing and photography. i've been reading your site for about a year, being an ex-long beachian, now located points northward. it's been about 30 years since i was in that part of l.a. and it is amazing to see the changes as chronicled here. good job.

Oh, man, hands down, my favorite place in LA. I took my (former) boyfriend there two years ago. He was from a suburb in Texas and freaked out, like, honest-to-God, freaked out. He thought it was dirty, crowded, totally hated it. Needless to say, we don't date anymore. But between the bacon-wrapped hot dogs and the clothes... I bought my prom dress here. One of my favs is the guy in Santee where you can pick out your leather belt and your buckle. Seriously, I go to the Fashion District to walk around, browse and sometimes buy, at least three times a week. (Then again, I spend time in Little Tokyo daily...) Your pictures are awesome.

great post. i am loving the neighborhood project. but as much as haggling is a part of the fashion district, you gotta be GOOD at it. you have to mean it and you have to want it, otherwise the vendors will notice in a second and you will not get a deal. i am a VERY bad haggler.

great post kemp!! the fashion district is wonderful. i love to wander through the forests of upright fabric bolts and pretend i'm in some upholstered fantasy world. and the sketchy color contact lenses for sale on every corner make my eyes scared. mmm.... purple...

Great report. The Fashion District is by FAR one of the best places in Los Angeles. It's so different than anything you would expect to find in this city. So densely packed and uniquely urban (well at least before 6pm). Great job to with the transit info! I would agree that Fashion District isn't DIRECTLY served by rail, but it's definitely rail adjacent... In fact, I'm going to go ahead and say it is, because both Blue Line Stations (Grand and San Pedro) fall within the "half-mile rule", which means they are a 10-minute walk or less from the destination.
