LAst Night's Action: Galactic Win
Galaxy 2, Pachua 1 - The Galaxy was without its biggest star (Beckham wasn't on the bench, much less the field), but 19,317 people still showed up to watch the struggling squad knock off one of Mexico's best club teams. Landon Donovan scored go-ahead goal in the 81st minute. Next up, the Galaxy will host Chivas -- the real Chivas of Guadalajara -- in more SuperLiga action on Saturday.
Astros 7, Dodgers 4 - When most fans look back on this game, they probably won't remember that Los Angeles was there. All eyes were on Craig Biggio, who announced his retirement (slated for the end of the season) a few hours before the first pitch. When he started in The Bigs, the Simpsons wasn't even a series. 20 seasons later (all in Houston), Biggio is a likely Hall of Famer. There was a reported two-minute standing ovation when he came to the plate in the first inning. Five frames later, he smacked the fourth grand slam of his career.
A's 4, Angels 3 - Despite going 4-7 since the All Star game, LAnaheim still has a two game lead in the AL West. They dropped another one to division foe Oakland, who has also struggled since the break. Vladamir Guerrero was 3-4 and Kelvim Escobar allowed three runs in seven innings.
Monarchs 67, Sparks 59 - There are few names in sports less intimidating than the Monarchs. The Mighty Ducks didn't sound too tough, but at least they weren't named after a butterfly. Sure, it's also a reference to the Kings -- but who wants to rule over cow town? Either way, the Sparks went north and lost their eighth game in the past nine.
Elsewhere - The Long Beach Armada are dogging Michael Vick in what could be one of the best local promotions in awhile ... A jury ruled against Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis in a case claiming doctors botched his gastric bypass surgery ... Magic Johnson is still winning hardware ... Looks like it'll be hard to find those Kangaroo soccer cleats.
