Stop with the cutesiness with words like "State Senate Person." They're fucking State Senators. I know what variety of cutesiness/irony you're trying to sell and I'm not buying. You're fucking annoying.

I'm not sure if the new location of Golden Apple comics is within the boundary of Fairfax Village. It's definitely a store that was part of my childhood and many other Angelenos. I'm glad the Grove was omitted on this profile, before I liked going there until it became a hipster crowd or your average mall. Andre's (6332 W 3rd St #18) deserve mentioning since that is where the masses go eat some cheap and fast Italian food.

It's tough to get everything together in these posts. I think this one is good. I learned a lot about the Fairfax Village that I didn't know before.

I wanted to add though: Fatty Arbuckle was innocent; the young girl in question died of appendicitis. It ruined his career though.

And, the Silent Movie Theater has quite the crazy history, at one time one of the owners murdered the other. The guy who owns it now has nothing to do with that though. He's really nice!

In the spirit of 19, my favorite part of the district is Largo. Great comedy nights, great Guinness pour. What else do you want?

Props for the Canter's ceiling shot. If anything beats the matzah ball soup there -- it's the wack ceiling.

And commenters 1, 2 -- the comments section is ALL part of the neighborhood project. As far as I can see, every entry in this project is a work in progress, seeded by a passionate volunteer.

no apologies. just add on what you can!

not to add more criticism, because I did enjoy the post (though wouldn't've minded if it was longer/more in depth), I wanted to add my 2 cents about Canter's. I wish I knew what food you had at Canter's, because I have had many friends order food that I really wouldn't consider to be their speciality and always claimed they hated Canter's until they "saw the light." Eggs, french fries, pies... all things i really wouldn't order there. Matzah ball soup, kishka, knishes, bagels and lox, reubens, other large deli sandwiches... all things i'd recommend. i will agree with you that it's fairly expensive, and that the bakery is good too.

The Farmer's Market has been on this site since 1934. It is a part of LA history with restaurants that have been there for over 50 years. There is some of the best food in LA that is one-of-a-kind, plus fresh bakeries and fresh meats. It is not a food court full of Panda Express and McDonalds.

Screenwriters have been meeting there for coffee and developing deals forever, and Thursday nights the community gathers for live music. It is a vibrant, active place for Angelinos to meet.

Just because developers have chosen to build a monstrosity next-door a few short years ago, it does not sudden;y make this integral part of LA culture its food court.

It may be in bad taste, but I feel I have to respond to the above comments. I used to live in Fairfax and certainly got to know it well. In writing the post, I had no intention of generating a huge list of bars and restaurants. That is what Zagat's is for. There are just too many to list. I think that the Farmer's Market is a joke. It is the de facto food court of the Grove. And the Grove is mall. And I refuse to promote mall culture. I respect the New Bev, but I thought, if I am going to discuss a revival film theater, I have got to do the Silent Theater, especially because it is a place that is enjoyed by many generations of people both young and old. Fairfax has some weird neighborhood issues that are depressing and not really befitting of what I took the essence of the Neighborhood Project to be. It is really hard to walk in Fairfax at night because the vermin problem (roaches, flies, rats, mice) is so bad because people throw trash and dog shit everywhere. Residents blantantly abuse domesticated pets by abandoning them to the street and then moving away. It is heartbreaking and very common. Fairfax is very developed so there is little growth to discuss. And the Shalom Retirement Home rocks. Where else can you see that in LA?

This was one of the Neighborhood posts I was most looking forward to and, like the above commenter, I gotta' say it was a big disappointment. Not nearly as interesting or in-depth as all of the previous posts. (It was still a decent effort, to be fair, with some good things.)

I hate to say it but this installation of LAist's "Neighborhood Project" is my least favorite yet. Way too short for an area that has so much to offer! What about places to eat like Lulu's, LaLa's, Fish Grill, Cube, and The Pig to name a few (not to mention the various places in the Farmer's Market like The Gumbo Pot). And bars? The Dime, Snake Pit? How about neighborhood mainstays like The New Beverly Cinema and Albano's Pizza?

Maybe its just me but I find all of this stuff a lot more interesting than The Shalom Retirement Hotel.

Sorry about the negative post. I promise the next one will be positive.
