I am an Oakland firefighter and have been doing crossfit since February of this year. It is the most functional workout for my career. You get quick results, you feel great, you look great and after every workout you actually feel like you've kicked ass and taken names! I visited Petranek recently and i must say they are an impressive bunch. If you are trying to shed a few to get into that bikini or you are looking for the ultimate alternative to designer fitness clubs then this is the place. Thanks Petranek! See you again next time I'm in town. Great article Mal!

Fantastic article! I'm not sure if there's been anything written that gets down to the nitty gritty bottom of the pukie bucket like Malingering's description. I've been around gyms and workouts, trainers and athletes all my life and nothing, and I mean nothing has compared to the experience of Crossfit and more importantly, the solid, no bullshit atmosphere and honest to goodness support at Petranek Fitness. The hardest part of my recent surgery was not the surgery - nor the recovery - it was being away from the gym, from my friends at the gym and especially Andy. He created a place where we work hard so we can play hard in all areas of our lives. Come give it a try. Nothing I can say will ever be able to give it the justice it deserves - but hell, Malingering? She just hit the sweet spot. Congrats!!

And I can't wait to beat Team Petranek at the Mud Run next year. Now it's time to call the Valley CrossFit Office!

I knew I was totally addicted after I hurt my hand and literally cried because I couldn't do a pull-up. Who knew that day would come?

Team Petranek kicked ass at the mud run. I can't wait to do it next year...

What a great article. You really captured what it's like to train at Petranek. I've never met a more diverse group of people who train harder and care more about others (they do fundraisers, call if you don't show up and genuinely give a shit). I won't train ANYWHERE else.

Fantastic article, Mal. It's easy to try to get yourself into a workout routine and also easy to fall out of it. CrossFit looks like a great way to commit and stay in it while challenging yourself with a great bunch of people. And it's the people that make the biggest difference.

I'm jealous. ;-) And happy for you and everyone else that's found a great way to get and stay fit there.

It doesn not have to be fun to be fun. Not at all an original comment, but it sums up the message of your post. Nicely written.

Welcome aboard - I've been seeing Angie, Barb, Fran and all the CrossFit gals for almost a year. My little group out in Phoenix motivate and lead me, at 50, to wonder what my limits really are.......

Crossfit, Andy Petranek, and the community at Petranek Fitness have tranformed my life in six weeks. And I'm no exaggerator. An incredible program that goes way beyond fitting into your jeans and helps reprogram the way you operate in life. - jayfader

Ah, here's the key: I didn't puke when I did the baseline because I took me *13* minutes to complete it. 2 months later I did it in 7.5 minutes.

You did a great job capturing this place. No one can strut around like God's gift to the rest of the gym when they're flat on their back gasping for air. It's a beautiful thing.

I traveled 3000 miles to train with Andy. Did it twice for a couple of intense days followed by e-coaching. It was, and still is, awesome after 18 months. Nothing else in the world like CrossFit. No better trainer than Andy Petranek.

Awesome article! You are absolutely right about Crossfit and Petranek. There is no workout in the world like it. It definitely pushes you to the limit (in a really good way).

BTW, who's the chick in the yellow shirt checking out butts in the first picture? Hmmm.....

Oh my god! You are doing CrossFit?!!? Who knew?

My former roommate has been doing this since last fall combined with Yoga and has nothing but raving reviews to say about it (and he just does it on his own from the website, no Petranek).

At the Mud Run last month, the CrossFit team schooled me as they should have. Maybe I really need to do start taking it seriously.
