Don't call it a comeback, but Hollywood Blvd. will soon look very different.
Today the Los Angeles City Council approved a $400 million, 7-building, mix-use complex that will feature 1,000 apartments as well as several shops and restaurants.
Built on the parking lots around the Pantages theater in the once-glorious center of Hollywood (Hollywood & Vine), the council voted unanimously to change zoning laws to allow for construction to begin at the end of this year.
Developer Veronica Hackett said she was attracted to the project in part because she believes the elements of a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood are coming together around it.But the thing we like the best is that there will be parking space available for commuters who want to park their cars next to the subway stop at Hollywood & Vine and take the Red Line to, say, Staples, or Universal, thus cutting down on traffic for the rest of us."One of these days, people are going to walk in Hollywood," said Hackett, who worked as a developer on the revitalization of Times Square in New York in the 1980s.
During that process she became acquainted with the Nederlander family, which owns several theaters for live performances, including the Greek Theatre and the Pantages in Los Angeles.
Hackett is managing partner of the Clarett Group, which has a 99-year lease with the Nederlander Co. for control of more than 7 acres around the Pantages that the family owns and planned to develop for many years. - LA Times
Blvd6200 would house 2,696 parking spaces underground or concealed behind stores on the first floor. "We had to get everything inside so we don't have ugly parking garages," Hackett said. "They're not inviting to walk by."One of the keys to getting people who are used to driving to use public transportation is to make it easy for them to park their cars near the major hubs. Lets hope that "portion" begins to grow around this important intersection that's making a great comeback.More than 650 spaces will be reserved for the Pantages on event days, and a portion of those will be available for public transit users on days when no performances are scheduled.

where will the hookers go?
Great! Now people can pay $1800 for a 500sf apartment right in the middle of Hollywood. I guess all the hipster Hollywood wannabes will be clamoring for these rentals.
walk around Colorado Blvd in Pasadena to see what it will look like.
It'll look shitty. 1000 new units on top of parking lot space and they claim this will make people want to walk? I guess they'll have to walk the half-mile it'll take to get from their apartment to their parking space!
If they really want people out of their cars they wouldn't build parking lots at all. These developments w/ these parking lots ostensibly made to reduce traffic are fucking stupid.
It always irks me when people are shocked that these TODs produce more traffic... well of course they do when you provide 2 parking spaces per apartment.
Not to mention that they're consistently priced high enough to exclude people who actually rely on public transit.
Absurd.
Im so glad we aren't stupid and just taking this shit in stride. It is going to look ugly of course. Paseo Colorado in Pasadena is wretched and the shops are cheap over priced crap. If there is a Tommy bahamas on Hollywood Blvd, I am going to kill myself. And what makes you think they arn't going to charge anyone who doesnt pay $1,800 for that 500 sq foot box $20 to park in this place? Its a sham. Its the wealthy bleeding Hollywood for all it's worth. Remember, the amazing hills that you used to be able to see from Hollywood Blvd next to Graumans Chinese? I mean I like the Kodak Theatre alot but theres a fucking hell of a lot of junky ass shops in there that we don't need. Development is cool but I'd also like to be able to look at the hills once in awhile. So lets see, this new place will have a starbucks, a Baja Fresh and overpriced boxes for rich midwesterners coming to hollywood for there own reality show. Great. Taht really adds to the rejuvination of Hollywood.
