This Week in Classical Picks: Tambuco Percussion Ensemble

Tambuco Percussion Ensemble

Tambuco Percussion Ensemble
Free at Grand Performances in Downtown LA

From contemporary percussion chamber music to world rhythms, this Mexico City based quartet is a staple of the percussion scene . While they do their own thing, you may see the three time grammy nominated ensemble collaborate with the likes of Kronos Quartet and the locally based Southwest Chamber Music. Check out the tunes "Hook" and "Metro Chabacano" on their MySpace page for two different feels of their music.

Saturday, July 21st @ 8 p.m.
Sunday, July 22nd @ 3 p.m.

For more percussion music, try the music of Harry Partch at Grand Performances on Friday at two concerts (12 p.m. and 8 p.m.)

For those in the Thousand Oaks/Oxnard area (okay, Brentwood too): We just received in our mail a heads up on the New West Symphony's 13th season which begins September 14th. Each of the seven programs is played three times, once in T.O., Oxnard and Brentwood.

Hollywood Bowl Classical Tuesdays & Thursdays: We caught the first classical Tuesday this past week and it was a blast. After years of listening to "Pictures at an Exhibition" on CD, hearing it live, coupled with choreographed-to-the-music fireworks at the end, was amazing. Do make a point of seeing the Los Angeles Philharmonic this summer at the Bowl.

For concerts I'd hve to suggest either the Russians are Coming (Rachmaninoff 3rd Piano Concerto in D Minor and Shostakovich 1st Symphony) or Grand Tour (Mozart Piano concerto No. 20 in D minor and Mozart Symphony No. 41 "the Jupiter")

or later on in September Dvorak Cello Concerto in B Minor with Lynn Harrell performing. It's the most amazing cello concerto ever. And probably one of the most difficult.
