update on Poster's Donuts... i guess it figures the one day i post about the place, i find out IT'S CLOSED DOWN!! :( either they went out of business or are doing some major remodeling. it's closed as of now.

Back in the '80S and there were a lot of CVS' all over Los Angeles and then they disappeared until their recent resurgence. I grew up in the Valley. So there!

A couple comments back reminded me -- I'll NEVER forget LA Times media reporter James Rainey telling a lunchtime audience at USC something to the extent of their being 88 cities in LA County and the Times covers NONE of them well. As LACityNerd and others in the LA blogging community have mentioned, WE (meaning the blogosphere) are the only ones capable/willing to cover the specifics of this megalopolis.

Just to reiterate: Burbank is not an Officially Designated Community of the City Los Angeles. It is a seperate municipality. But, it is still considered to be part of the San Fernando Valley (along with Glendale, Calabasas, the City of San Fernando, and the portion of LA City north of Mulholland). Some notes: Bob Hope acutally lived in LA City (Toluca Lake), not Burbank. -Bob Hope Airport is run by the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority. LA doesn't have any control even though the flight path is over LA City and the northern runway is in LA City limits. -The Los Angeles Equestrian Center is actualy in the City of LA, as are parts of the parks on the northern side of the 134/LA River that Burbank maintains. They have a long-term lease with LA City to operate the park. -Clybourn is the city line between LA and Burbank, except for a weird jut-out in "Toluca Woods" where street names change for jsut a few blocks (just south of Magnolia) PS The area along Cahuenga Boulevard West is still known as the Cahuenga Pass from the Ford/Hollywood Bowl to Lankershim.

thanks for this post. i've been living in toluca lake, er, burbank, for four years now and i love it. also, there is a donut shop called Poster's open 24 hrs, in the Vons shopping center on Pass and Oak.

I went to Buchanan's for St Patricks the same day I saw that "potholes" commercial. Some guy was introduced to me as "This is Joe Johnson. His brother, John Johnson used to be mayor." I had a little too much Bass, and the next day (my husband) Bob said, "You were OK last night until you started poking that guy in the chest and saying, "Your brother wants to FIX MY potholes!" Oh, and I usually get bangers and mash.

Thanks everyone for the comments! The political system here is somewhat convoluted, so thanks for the clarification, Andy. The 172 known communities are a helpful guide. There are many other cities and towns in and around Los Angeles that are not listed. In addition to the 172, LAist has chosen to cover anything we feel like covering. But then I've been listening to a lot of Digital Underground lately.

Ramos is Mayor thru 4/30/08. Todd Campbell served the year prior. http://www.ci.burbank.ca.us/council/ramos.htm I believe Kramer was the mayor in 2001-2. Burbank has a bizarre system (that I don't fully understand) in which city council members each? serve one year as mayor. Inevitably, the city council members (or mayor) does something extremely shady which deems the entire process irrelevant (see Stacy Jo Murphy).

I live in Burbank, and really love this town, despite only having been here for a year... Probably has something to do with my being from a similar-sized town in Indiana....it really does feel as if you are living the small-town life 10 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. Yay Burbank!

I loved this whole post and all the links. Burbank is my hometown and I'm still here. I've been to almost every place that was mentioned and I watch Burbank TV channel 6! I'm having teacakes instead of cake for my wedding. I love our alleys! I am a little miffed that you've shared all of Burbank's wonderful secrets. Now people will want to move in on my turf. ;)

i LOVE that you did such a lengthy post about burbank!! i grew up there and 2 years ago, moved back after a 12 year hiatus. i live near quite a few of the locations for which you posted pictures and i'm so glad laist is recognizing my lovely hometown. it's perfect because it's close to everything, but far enough away that you feel like you live in a smaller community. thanks, elise! and thanks, laist!
