The All Star Break has come to an end, and so goes my week of leisure. I caught up on the Romanesque orgies, coke parties and golden shower extravaganzas that I have missed out on since April. My how Caligula would have blushed.
Now that I’m refreshed, let’s talk some Dodgers baseball.
They start the second half of the season with a weekend series against the hated Giants up in San Francisco and a pitching staff in shambles. Outside of Tubby, Prozac and Game Over v.2.0 you never know what’s going to happen. Chad Billingsley looks like he’s starting to come through though it’s still too early to tell. Mark Hendrickson is plagued with getting even worse run support than Prozac, the last game against the Florida Marlins being a glaring exception. And Brett Tomko. Brett Tomko.
Brett Tomko is the scheduled starter for Sunday afternoon’s game. According to the Dodger’s webpage, “it’s a pretty bold move by manager Grady Little handing the ball to Tomko, who is going through probably the worst physical and mental slump of his career.”
I’m torn about this decision. On one hand I think Tomko is better suited as a starter, and this could work out swimmingly. On the other hand, he’s been absolutely horrible both as a starter and reliever. His best outing came against Colorado on April 10 when he threw six innings and notched only one hit and no runs with three walks and nine strikeouts.
One of two situations will occur on Sunday. Either the Giants get shut out or Barry Bonds will hit five homers to McCovey Cove and break Hank Aaron’s record. That is if he decides to play an afternoon game.
With the trading deadline coming at the end of the month, there is any number of guesses as to what general manager Ned Colletti will do. Will he get a power hitter? Will he get a starting pitcher? Will he get both?
Last year he brought in Marlon Anderson and Greg Maddux seemingly out of nowhere. There were no rumors about Maddux coming to Los Angeles like one would expect when a marquee name gets traded. So I have no idea what Colletti will do nor do I care to guess what he does. All I care is that the Dodgers make the playoffs and win at least two postseason games. I don’t think that’s much to ask for, right?
So bring on the second half, and get ready for a wild wild ride in the NL west right down to game 162.

I don't know how Tomko still has a Major League job. He's been so unreliable recently that I've turned off the TV whenever he entered the game. He's a great artist, and maybe he missed his calling? I'd much rather see him in Venice Beach painting caricatures than in Chavez Ravine with that gas can. As for the other Dodgers, I hope we don't make any trades because doing so would probably cost us a combination of Kemp, Loney, Billingsley, Meloan, or Kershaw. There isn't anyone on the market now that would turn the Dodgers into bonafide contenders able to take down the Mets or any of the prominant AL teams. Let the kids play and when they reach their potential, we'll have the foundation of an extended period of dominance.
This Militant believes Little and Tomko are part of an East Coast conspiracy, funded by ESPN, to keep the Dodgers down by all means possible.
What's Little thinking? If he wants Tomko to pitch himself out of a funk, why do it against our most hated rivals? He should be experimenting against the Nationals or better yet, Triple-A. Tomko's a BUM. I wonder if he has the decency to wear a mask whenever he gets his paycheck because he's robbing the Dodgers blind.
