Someone named "Biffles" pontificating on what is or isn't legitimate discourse doesn't really do wonders for the arguments of poised and evolved book lovers everywhere, either.

The great thing about independent bookstores is that they're all different; some suit certain readers, others suit those with different tastes. There's a place for everyone....even for commenters who think calling a bookstore a "leaden turd" is legitimate discourse.

Sure do! As much as I visited the Dutton's in Beverly Hills, Burbank, Arco Center Plaza, and North Hollywood!

It's a little hard to be self-righteous when Dutton's itself has proven itself to be such a leaden turd.

I'm not sure which part of "We’ll be watching you and your condo planning. We like what we’re hearing, but we wonder if you really mean it." and "Are you a big guy waiting to swoop in or a champion of the little independent that could? Time will tell." means that we're OWNED. We hold a healthy degree of skepticism both for the changed plans and the ones Munger has just announced. Hence the "time will tell" bit.

As for where we shop - we buy independent. Period. Pending demolition or not. And even though Dutton's is way, way out of our way, we make a point to visit often. You?

Suckered again by developers! They come in with a huge plan for 60 condos and everyone wrings their hands and cries and blogs about it. Then, when the guy offers a scaled-down version - something he'd planned all along - you chalk it up to a big victory for preservationists and bookstore lovers, go back to buying on Amazon.com again and rarely if ever set foot in the place.

OWNED.
