Box Office Review: French rat defeats American hero

Remy the Rat from Ratatouille

Pixar's Ratatouille was tops at the box office this weekend, raking in a healthy 47.2 million dollars. While that number was well below previous Pixar films like Cars (60 milllion) and The Incredibles (70 million), it was more than enough to take down Bruce Willis and Live Free or Die Hard which pulled in 33.1 million. Both movies enjoyed across-the-board good reviews and should show decent legs in the coming weeks.

Last week's clunker Evan Almighty managed to scrape in an additional 15 million but it's still well on its way to losing plenty of money for Universal. Its gross stands at a limp 60.6 million dollars after two weeks. After that, everything was fairly pro forma from last week: 1408 (10.6M, 40.3M), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (9M, 114.8M), the durable Knocked Up (7.4M, 122.4M), Ocean's Thirteen (6M, 102M) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (5M, 295.7M). Two other openers finished 9th and 10th for the weekend. Sicko opened with a higher than expected 4.5 million and Evening underperformed at 3.5 million.
