what happens when you get hit with a line drive at dodger stadium

ouch

ever wonder what happens when you get really good seats on the baseline at dodger stadium and you get pegged with a line drive right off gonzo's bat?

i will tell you.

ball comes flying at your face at 80mph. put up hand to stop ball. ball hits your hand so loud that everyone in the section gasps. ball bounces off your hand and kid in the row behind you gets the ball. gleeful kid is shown on dodgervision. hand begins to swell to the size of... well... a baseball.

no one comes to see if you are okay. you start to feel nauseated and dizzy. 20 people in your section flag down an usher. usher brings bag of ice. emts show up. you stand up so they can look at you and you slump forward and nearly lose consciousness from the pain. very nice man catches you before you go face first into the crowd.

emts strap you to a gurney because you can't stand. the rush you to the first aid room in dodger stadium. there are 3 other people there, all of them had passed out as well, but not because they had a line drive crushed at their face, just because.

bunch of people come to tell you there's nothing they can do. hand is now twice the size of the other. nurse comments that you are green. meanwhile the padres score 6 runs and pardes fan in bed next to you is cheering despite having passed out 15 minutes earlier. try to flip off padres fan until you realize hand is likely broken.

doctor gives you injection of painkiller and wraps your hand. swelling is out of control. sit in first aid for another hour until urge to vomit subsides.

return to seat. the crowd applauds. have flashbacks at every foul ball hit to the right side. consider sitting under seat.

dodgers lose. leave ballpark with busted hand and no foul ball.

go to local er for x-rays. wait over an hour. no one comes to see why you're there or do any triage. get disgusted and have friend take you home since you can't drive.

write one handed post for laist. go scrounge for vicodin. try not cry.

Oh no!!!

I sure hope Uncle Vin reads this and decides to pick you up and let you sit in the safety of the booth.

It's Penny v. Peavy, the Dodgers need you there!

get well soon, Mal.

I haven't really been a baseball fan since the strike. It was the point in which my ADD was in full effect and 9 Innings of a game seemed like a eon. And then there was the fact I was moving around too much. I haven't really attached myself to any one team in said years and that's why, I think, they lost me as a fan.

I decided to take my parents to see the Jays vs. Yankees at the Roger's Center (formerly known as the Sky Dome). My parents love to go and I could take them since my dad still hasn't found his next gig. Visiting from LA, it was the least I could do.

So we drive down after the work day and squished into our seats. We were sitting on the 3rd base foul line, 100 level. A good view of everything and not too far from the field.

The Jays dominated the game. (Jays are doing slightly better than the Yankees in the season so far) But the entire game I kept thinking, "if a ball were to hit me I think I would want me to hit me in the front so it wouldn't give me another concussion, or mess up my back." haha if I only knew.

Top of the eighth inning, Matsui hits all ball RIGHT at us. Dad stood up quick to try and catch it. I watched it come towards us and decide to stay out of the way although turn to see who catches the prize. Well the guy behind me stands up and bats at it with his hand and SMACK it hits me right in the face.

Oh yes baseball fans: I claim the ball, pop it in my purse and then run to first aid. I'm dazed, but text my husband in LA "Hey I just caught a ball with my face." At least it hadn't knocked out teeth or my already challenged sense of humor. I too had to bite my lip not to cry on the big screen or in front of all those strangers.

So 2 Advil and a bag of ice later, the Jays win the game 7-2 and I have a game used ball to claim as the prize.

I'm sorry you didn't at least get the game used ball. It made it seem a little more worth it.

Holy crap, Mal! You're just a target for injuries this week, huh? First your toe, now this?!

The Dodgers owe you. Big time. Gonzo could at least sign that ball that busted your hand.

Hope you're feeling better soon, hon.

(and I have to ask...the camera's okay, right? :-D )

I definitely feel you're owed that ball. Signed would be even better.

Ouch... I broke my toe the other day but that was from chasing a girl, not being pasted by a baseball. (And you do deserve that ball. Everyone should be able to keep the bullet that was extracted from their bodies.)

Still missing TypeKey... « mushroom »

Good God Mal! Suffer for your Dodgers. Truly sorry. Have your cats pamper you this weekend. AND YOU NEED TO GO GET AN X-RAY!

soooooooooo sad!

Oh my God! I can't believe they did not take you to the hospital and have you X-rayed, and then pick up the bill and make all the players come visit you. Is there some kind of waiver that by entering the park you give up your right to not have your hand broken?

so sorry mal...wish I could have been there to take one for you

xo

get well soon

KARMA IS A BITCH! ISN"T IT??

Hope you're doing better, Mal. Make sure you get that hand looked after.

Bill S. (too lazy to register)

i was waiting for a karma person to show up. if anything happens to me they appear out of nowhere. karma doesn't exist, jackass. think about it.

got an x-ray, it's not broken, though the doctor said from the size of the contusion he's shocked all of my bones are in tact. i just have to wear an immobilizer for a week or so.

yay for karma and calcium supplements.

I think calling Karma a bitch is sexist. What if Karma's a man?

Karma's bullshit. If you're running around thinking that "Karma's" going to get you for things you do, then you have a conscience problem you need to reexamine.

Back on topic, great news, Mal. It's amazing how strong bones can be sometimes. Take it from me, someone who had a golf ball hit at her face and didn't have a broken bone or fracture because of it.

yikes! get well soon. you should complete the adventure by seeing "sicko" today (after today's game, of course).

Yay for a day at the hosptial! And pain! Whoohooo! Things coming out of nowhere? What do you do... pencil Karma in. If you don't believe in engerigies (and I'm NOT talking The Secret here) then you're missing out.

Mal,

You have GOT to learn to duck instead of trying to catch those. Let someone less valuable and without a camera get hurt instead. We need you to keep us aware of what's really happening in LA.

Celticman

Nice pic. People with fat thumbs and bad finger nail polish bother me. What are they thinking? I mean don't they see they have a fat thumb? And then what do they do, put bad polish on the nail to call attention to the fat thumb, I mean come on! Someone should open a fat thumb treatment center where they can do thumb lifts to get the thumb back in shape. It's like the thumb is trying to swallow the nail as if to hide the hideous color. Come on people, there's an epidemic out there of fat thumbs! The whoel white shoes/black jeans thing is for another post, don't get me started!

Thanks,
DINGALING

What the hell are engerigies?!?

Lol, my bad, energies, sorry folks!

Those aren't black jeans, but anyway...

I went to school with Karma and she was a very nice girl. A redhead who was a late bloomer, perhaps, but she's a JAG lawyer now in Maryland.

Oh, wait, Karma -- not Kharma. My bad. But she is still a hottie.

« mush » from the hood

KARMA?

If you believe in that I got a toga and razor for you. So why don't you go get all of your other Freak buddies together and jump around at the airport.

Sorry you got hit, But its a great story to tell in the Future!

Karma... Thats so funny...

Isn't wishing bad things on people, or delighting in them when they occur, also bad karma?

hope you recover speedily - hope all the Dodgers are now sending you get well cards. Hope the child reads all of this and sends you the ball

Oh, Mal!

I'm so glad that nothing was broken, and I hope everything heals up quickly.

Peggy Archer, who's tired of the "karma" fuckwits already.

LOL ITS ALL ABOUT THE ANGELS BABY !!!!!!!!!!!!! DODGERS SUCK LOL BUNCH OF NOOOOBZ !!!!!!!!!!!! SORRY BOUT YOUR HAND THOUGH HOPE YOU HEAL SOON !!!!!
