Pinkberry, Schminkberry

Homemade Pinkberry

Now that I've got your attention, I’ve got a problem with yogurt. My problem isn’t limited to Pinkberry. In fact, it’s more of a yogurt in the market problem. The problem is that when you buy yogurt, you mix in that stuff at the bottom and it’s just too sweet. I don’t want to pretend that my yogurt is some kind of fruit mousse. Somewhere about the time they decided that yogurt was good for you, they decided that we couldn’t tolerate the taste of actual yogurt. But I like that taste. And Pinkberry is good, but expensive, and apparently there’s some question as to whether or not it contains real yogurt (also, it's a little watery). I like real yogurt – I might as well eat something that is real yogurt.

So a couple of months ago, I decided this was a problem I could figure out on my own. So you buy some non-fat yogurt and scoop it into a cereal bowl (I searched long and hard for appropriate sized cereal bowls – I’m not kidding! Portion control, people!) Cut up between two and four strawberries over it and sprinkle it with brown sugar (I have no reason why brown sugar; I’m not one of those “no white powders” people, I think I just hadn’t used any in awhile) so you get some sweet bites and some yogurt bites and it’s all good.

Now you say, this seems pretty obvious. Well, yeah, though I’d argue that it’s somewhat less obvious than just buying single servings of yogurt in the market. But you’re eating something that looks like what it tastes like and isn’t smuggling in any weird stuff like corn syrup, additives, or those little gelatinous fruity things they call fruit. And, for you Pinkberry fanatics, it tastes like Pinkberry! Though not as cold.

Did you ever read the book, French Women Don't Get Fat? The author swore by uncultured yogurt every morning. She says it the only kind they serve fresh in France and even bought some crazy kitchen appliance to make it in her apartment in NYC when she moved here. I agree with you on the preservatives and who knows what else is put into the fro-yo we see everywhere. Thanks for you tip!

peach house in alhambra just opened...love it more than pinkberry---its creamier and more like yogurt....pinkberry is too sour and icy....mmmm...i laos love trader joe's greek style strrawberry yogurt -- its very yogurt-y without that fake fruit sweetness...
