SHUT UP!

The New Year

Last night, I went to see The New Year play at Spaceland. I’ve liked The New Year since they were Bedhead in the ’90s, so I was pretty excited about it.

The New Year (somewhat inexplicably) have four guitars, but there are still a lot of quiet moments in their sets. Unfortunately, every time one of those moments came, all you could hear was people chatting and squawking about their various BS, so that the only enjoyable moments of the set were when the band played loud enough to drown them out. Even then, that simply prompted some people to raise their voices so their stories about their dogs or their dumb jobs or some guy that didn’t call them back could be heard over what I guess these people interpreted as inconvenient din.

Here’s my question, why do I pay $12 or $15 or whatever the admission price is, to hear your dumb stories? Aren’t there a million bars in this city that don’t have bands playing at them where you and your friends can babble about your stupid lives? Spaceland is a MUSIC VENUE. It books bands that people want to see, wait to see, are excited to see. They go there to actually LISTEN TO THE MUSIC. Talk as much as you want between sets, but why go see a semi-quiet band just so you can yell over the music? Other people didn’t pay money so they could hear a remix of The New Year plus your lame opinions about indie film or Paris Hilton or the White Stripes or whatever it is you feel like you have to travel to Spaceland at 11 p.m. to talk about. The worst part is, Spaceland actually has a back room which provides the perfect place for that really important conversation that you must have right as the band begins its one-hour set. I mean, if you don’t like the band, why did you pay money to go to Spaceland? There are plenty of places in this town for people who’d rather drink and gossip than listen to music. Go to freakin’ Little Joy or The Roost or whatever hipster bar you want to, but if you end up at a club where someone’s favorite band is playing, then do us all a favor and SHUT UP.

Nikki...you are singing my song!!!

This is my number one pet peeve when it comes to most ANY concert or show I attend....(or, even now...Movies!)

If you want to come to a music show to sit and yakkity yak to your fuckface friends, GO OUTSIDE! GO HOME! GO AWAY FROM PEOPLE WHO CAME TO ACTUALLY LISTEN TO THE MUSIC!!! WTF PEOPLE?!?!? ARE YOU HIRED TO COME TO THESE EVENTS TO PISS PEOPLE OFF?@?!!

Same with people on cellphones at the movies. If you can't handle not having your phone on for 2 hours or less, then don't go to a fucking movie. Unless you are a E.R. doctor. And even then, why are you at a movie? I don't appreciate your blue glow interruption while I'm completely involved in a film so much so I forget I'm sitting in a theater....until, of course, your blue glow yanks me out of my reverie.

Seriously...who ARE you people? Why do you pay money to go to things just to talk on your phone or talk to your companions? I don't get it.

and I hate you.

I love Spaceland, and will say it's my favorite venue in LA. I rock out there all the time, but it is indeed annoying that so many people go their to actually talk and hang out. I love grabbing a beer, and watching some music to unwind. I don't want to hear a 45 year old hipster talk about his vespa and living with his mom.

Here, here! You should have gave them the old SSSHHHH!

thank you nikki. it needed to be said.

i was actually talking about this last night at the hotel cafe. (don't worry, i wasn't talking during the music set.) my friend and i were so grateful that a quiet band like great lake swimmers was playing at a venue like hotel cafe where it's basically understood that the music is on the quieter side and people for the most part kept their mouths shut.

i saw great lake swimmers last year at spaceland and sure enough, same problem. yak yak yak.

I was on the opposite side of the stage and didn't really have that problem. While talking during the set of a band that hasn't been to los angeles in over two years is nothing short of a sin, if i were you i would've moved as far away from the bar as possible.
