Dear LAist, Why Do You Sometimes Cover Things That Aren't Happening In LA?

now thats what i call a super friends Dear LAist,

I come here every day and sometimes I read something that isn't even happening in LA. What gives?

Curious in Culver City

Dear Curious,

Like the city of LA itself, LAist is influenced by news and events all over the world. True, we specialize in bringing you the news of the greatest city in the world, Los Angeles, but sometimes we will tell you how stinky Florida is, how great Las Vegas is, how crappy a homicidal mob was in Austin, or how good a week vacation in Vancouver might be.

We do this because that's how people in LA actually think. We all travel, we all have friends everywhere, we all talk about global current events. Therefore now and then we will cover those things in LAist.

This is nothing new. Hell, the LA Times is named after this city, but you have to skip the entire first section of the paper to really get to the news about our town. Meanwhile the local tv news is usually 10-20% "news" that has nothing to do with LA.

At LAist our percentage of non-LA coverage is usually less than 5%, and most of the time when we do it, it is either the story of the day or what Should be the story of the day. Some people don't want any non-LA stories in LAist, and that's nice, but it's not gonna happen.

It's a small world, after all, and things that happen around the state, country, and planet, effect us and vice versa, so we would be foolish to ignore the news of the day just because it didn't originate down your street.

On a typical day LAist will post about 20 stories. Some days you wont see any non-LA stories, some days you will see one, rarely will you see two. If it angers you to see any non-LA posts in LAist, you should seriously take a good look at your life, not our blog.

Keep up the good work. That pic is great, where is it from?

Geez. Defensive much? You guys should have more respect for your readers and not insult their intelligence with this bullshit rationalization. You make it sound like there's a master plan at work here. If you just admitted you throw up non-LA filler like YouTube clips because you have nothing else, people wouldn't mind it so much. But when you talk down to people like this, you just sound like a defensive asshole.

while i would never decline an invitation to admit to being an asshole, i never said that any of our posts are "filler", just the opposite in fact.

there is a plan to LAist and i just explained some of it. if you dont want to agree with it, thats cool, but when people ask me questions i actually answer them.

likewise, i dont think theres any reason for us to be defensive about 5% non-LA coverage a few times a week.

but yes im an asshole, no question.

as for where the pic is from, i dont know. but i like it.

it's true. tony's a major asshole.

Tony not insult people who complain?!? Clearly you haven't been 'round these parts very long.

Da-yum. That photo is bomb.

And, by the way, I think Tony's response was mostly asshole-free.

not an asshole, a dick
