Gang of Four

When I think of how new bands come up with tracks to sample, I think of classics like the Gang of Four (apparently so does the Rapture). Plus my intellectual self can't help but appreciate the reference. Their are two Gangs of Four. The first is the Maoist Gang of Four in China, integral members of the Central Cultural Revolution Group. But the second reference, and the one this band is alluding to is the "big four" Structuralist theorists: Claude Lévi-Strauss, Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes, and Jacques Lacan. This band says a big influence to them was during a university-funded trip to New York, where they saw Television and the Ramones at CBGB.

I could listen to that song for days. And twenty years ago, I did.
