I'd say they pick a word or phrase to search on both the Google (regular) Search and the Google Blog Search and then add up the hits that that word or phrase shows on the upper right-hand side and then divide by 1000000000000000 and come up with the number. Of course, that part isn't included in the equation so .... ASK TIME!
