gee everyone, thanks for all the comments. jane, like it or not, apple is a big, spalshy company that everyone watches, not just people eager for new macs (like me).

announcing new macs is important to developers because apple is asking them to put faith and trust and work into a platform they promise is going to be around in five years.

announcing new hardware sends a signal that apple isn't just a consumer electronics company and has not forgotten their core business: computers.

i'm not a developer but i know several who were disappointed at the keynote and are concerned that apple doesn't care as much about macs and instead is going to focus on making phones and other lifestyle items.

i think that's a valid concern on their part. and that's my point here.

thanks for reading.

Chris.

This is WWDC. What you want belongs in MacWorld etc., not at WWDC.

I can't say much without breaking NDA, but it's obviously not like those updates aren't coming someday.

Developers wanted an iPhone SDK, or at least something about developing apps for the iPhone, and that's what they got (albeit a bit shitty). Most people here are software devs, and Leopard is important because it's the upcoming OS. Safari for Windows was random, but there's a reason for why it was announced yesterday, and given the number of web devs at this conference as well, somewhat appropriate.

This is one hell of an inappropriate place to announce updates to consumer Macs and consumer software. People shouldn't be giving a crap about this keynote because it just doesn't apply to them, and if they watch then it's their problem if they don't get what they're looking for. Apple has done WWDC for ages and has almost never deviated from doing mostly dev-applicable announcements at the Stevenote. This is not about making old school Mac users happy. This is about feeding developers who have to exist to create amazing apps, otherwise OS X and Apple may just as well be dead. Plus, the crowd of people coming to watch WWDC updates at sites like MacRumors and Engadget has never been as high as they are around special events and Macworld, so basically everyone but the retardedly hungry press doesn't care much about the keynote either.

@tony, you are so wrong, just so wrong. i'm not interested in creating iPhone apps, but no potential SDK in the nearby future and web apps only is really messed up. If Apple thought this was good enough for us devs, then why couldn't they just do everything through Safari and use bookmarks or something...but obviously they thought otherwise given the Apple apps on the iPhone.

fwiw, I find everything else at WWDC vastly more valuable than the keynote, and it hasn't even been the second day here yet. Many others probably think the same. Anyone expecting any hype or releases during the WWDC keynote is paying attention for the wrong reasons.

Apple in the weeks leading upto WWDC gave us MacPro (well at-least a new 8 Core model) new Macbooks and MacbookPro. Leaving the IMac and Mac Mini untouched. The only logic was that something big was coming to the IMac line. Then nothing it goes to show that their not in the right place. Most of leopard demos felt like the same stuff from a year ago. Next is the IPhone so I am wondering if we will ever see a new IMac anytime soon.

Yes, it was a real sleeper. I'm sick of hearing about Leopard. Apple is reminding of Microsoft with their "It's coming..." approach. I have no interest in an iPhone. Besides that's been hyped to death, too.

I'm on a Mac and I don't even use Safari (I use Firefox). I'm certainly not going to use it on my PC.

I was very disappointed there was nothing really new a the WWDC. I'm particularly disappointed that they seem to have forgotten about their desktop users by delaying Leopard (focusing their attention on the iPhone) and having nothing new for desktops for SOOOO long.

Its the selling it as open that freaks me out.

Why do we actually care its OS X based when it is closed? It is Safari based system... that is what it is for developers.

Showing that it parses out addresses and phone-numbers is nothing new.

So they actually said to the crowd: "sorry guys it still is a closed system".

LOL at the idea that anything is a closed system in 2007.

iPhone is the most alive thing ever. everything about it has been exposed and its not even out yet. once it is released there will be more hacks, upgrades, improvements and tweaks than anything currently in your pocket now.

LOL at the iPhone openness for third-party applications.

Its a closed system.

Apps running in Safari WILL NEVER have the same look and feel as the normal applications running on this phone.

For me the iPhone is already dead.

Couldn't agree more! It was a sleeper. I was looking forward to it for the last few weeks and wow was I disappointed.

Although I understand why Apple is going more "electronics" and more windows based each day... I have to admit I kind of liked being part of a small group that tried to "think different".

While most of their recent moves will help them gain market share and open up their customer base, I think they better remember who they are otherwise they'll get swallowed up.

However, I will admit I do like the direction their going with Google and I'm really looking forward to some exciting products from them. Like you said maybe some type of collaboration on .mac. It really is lacking and will be non-existent unless they do something this year.

I'll finish by saying that I also have to agree with you on the lack of new products at WWDC. Like you said... everyone is watching and the hype on mainstream media about this keynote was huge and with that much expectation you have to deliver some "wow factor" and that was simply missing today.

Hopefully we'll see some of those new products over the next few months, but my guess is we won't see squat for new hardware until October when Leopard is released and that also is close to the holiday season.

Great article though. Keep up the great writing.

Yeah, today's keynote was a bit of a sleeper, but it's WWDC, not MacWorld. The one thing that I thought was REALLY cool was the new dashboard widget maker that lets you make a widget out of anything on the web. I can't make to create a widget for my fantasy baseball team standings!

As for new products, I'm looking forward to the new iMac as well. Aluminum enclosure would be really nice. And I agree with the need for a smaller MacBook Pro.

As for the iPhone, the hype is getting crazy...but I really think it's probably worth it. There's nothing even remotely close to it out there right now. Granted, I'm going to wait for the 2G version on a 3G network.
