A mysterious package left in the street at 5700 Wilshire Boulevard has closed down 3 blocks of traffic on Wilshire around the La Brea Tar Pits. At this time, 2:16pm, the bomb scare squad is on their way, office buildings are not being evacuated yet, but certainly exercise caution both in entering the area and also while trying to manuever around traffic.
It is unknown how long this will last, but certainly the longer it goes on, traffic will really be snarled for many commuters by end of day.
***UPDATE***
Whatever was in the mysterious briefcase has been cleared and removed from the scene. The streets are back open and traffic is progressing as normal.
***UPDATE 2***
great pics on Franklin Ave., who had the perfect angle

What is your source for this?
I witnessed much the result of this firsthand from walking down Wilshire around 2pm this afternoon.
Sidewalks were even closed for about 3 blocks in each direction and police were directing traffic.
Bomb scare causes stir on Wilshire
Threatening briefcase found to be empty
By DANA HARRIS
A threatening briefcase in front of a mid-Wilshire lunch spot brought out helicopters, yellow tape and a dozen police cars Thursday afternoon.
The restaurant is located directly across the street from Wilshire Courtyard, an office building that contains a number of entertainment offices including the Weinstein Co., E! and Variety.
The activity centered on a briefcase left next to the tables and chairs in the outside eating area in front of Organic To Go.
At 2:30, police appeared inside the Variety newsroom advising employees to remain at least 30 feet away from all windows. By three p.m., however, officers opened the briefcase and found it empty.
I drove right by on Curson crossing Wilshire and wondered what the deal was. I confirmed the closure and "bomb squad" activity with a phone call to a friend working in the SAG/AFTRA building right across the street from the activity.
Strange that this is the only place I've found a mention of this - nothing on the news channel websites when I checked around 15:00 - Thanks for the quick info. I live and work within a one mile radius and appreciate being able to find info on what's happening in my neighbourhood.
Cool - I'm glad this was helpful! Blogs rule :)
I used to work in the Variety building, and after 9/11 we had periodic bomb scares. Most were minor and lame. The most serious one occurred because someone left a suspicious package in the lobby (i.e. some dude forgot his backpack in the lobby), and it happened to be the day that the mayor was visiting the building or having a meeting there.
The police evacuated the entire building. My co-workers, my boss and I caught a bus the Beverly Center where we watched a movie, then took a taxi back to the building. Everything was fine. No bomb, but such a nice diversion.
i worked at E! across the street at that time, ES
i remember that!
