Not Bad, Malo

Yep Malo is right by the Elliott Smith wall on Sunset There is a song in the early summer evening air and it’s a song of hipsters, small yummy tacos, and very, very strong drinks. I live a considerable distance from Malo, but it’s always a great place to meet up with people before going to the Greek. Malo is on Sunset Boulevard, the décor is dark, iron is very much in evidence, there are lots of curtains. Outside, the décor is minimal, with a tent over the patio. It’s not warm out there, but they have heaters which they’re perfectly happy to light for you.

They say that their most popular dish is the beef and pickle tacos (seriously!), and they aren’t bad, though they taste a little like the tacos your mom used to make when you were a kid so that she didn’t have to go to Taco Bell, except that the shells are freshly deep fried and crispy, instead of coming from a box.

Most of the tacos are served on small corn tortillas, a la carte. The beef is good, I understand the fish are excellent, but the real winner is the chorizo, delicately seasoned, it doesn’t assault the pallette, instead, it’s just firmly good, and it’s the only one that comes with guacamole and sour cream.

The drinks are strong (the margaritas especially, and they aren’t particularly sweet either) but the mojitos are excellent, the white sangria is good.

My only real problem with Malo, is that the chips (fried to order) and salsa (you gotta pick one) are not free, which is a key part of the Mexican restaurant experience. Why not free chips guys? Why not?

i like this place a lot. the burnt habanero and cream salsa is incredible. some days they make it too spicy and they will happily add some more cream for you to temper it--be careful if you ask for this though, because the spiciness is honestly the only thing that keeps me from simply drinking the stuff. speaking of drinking, you forgot to mention the cucumber water! tastes like a springhouse hidden in the woods....

Also, they don't have blended margaritas!!!

Another note about the place, that will either seem really cool or totally useless, is that the wall out front of the place was used for the cover art of Elliott Smith's "Figure 8" cd. Obviously since I'm pointing it out, you can guess which camp I fall into.

Oh yes, I'm a fan. Was born in Mexico City here (helloooo), and therefore qualified and happy to announce that Malo es muy bueno! The guac, the taquitos, even breakfast there on the weekends, disgustingly delicious. Oh, and on top of it all, great location, cool patrons, a bazillion different tequilas...if you don't "get it", well, you probably never will. But look on the bright side dears: there's always pots of stuff on the westside for ya, so just head west on Sunset until you see all the pretty lights!
