Most bloggers constantly use the "media" as their sources for news and other info. I think it's a case of biting the hand that feeds you. Bloggers are simply more critical, without responsability.

OK, but by the same token it's because of critics that someone like you knows and appreciates Jim Thomson at all. His books might not even be in print by now if it weren't for the critical re-evaluation he got and all the lavish praise from critics. Unless your the type who haunts used bookstores looking for pulp and noir fiction paperbacks, Thomson would never have come across your radar if it weren't for professional critics with a wide audience.

Untrue. Your "open, inclusive discussion about culture" is what cheapens cultural critique in that adding more voices to the debate doesn't necessarily foster understanding and enlightenment - it just means that there are more voices talking at once.

If by "cling(ing) onto the scraps of their eroding power" you mean "trying to make a living", you would be correct. What's Schickel going to do for a living, wait tables? You might as well align yourself with Judge Smales from "Caddyshack" and say "The world needs ditchdiggers, too".

Critics critique. You're just vexed that they get paid for it.
