Senior Plows Through People at Gelson's in the Valley

gelsons ouch

From our tipster email box we get this from Drew:

Here are some pictures of the accident involving an elderly driver plowing through the Gelson's outdoor sitting area on Riverside and Laurel Canyon. i spoke with an officer on the scene and said to the best of his knowledge there were some injured, one man pinned underneath the car but no deaths that he knew of, thankfully!

Evidently an elderly driver got flustered and somehow ended up reversing full speed into the sitting area. Nothing conclusive yet since it's so new however.

This is why we love our readers.

Update from the Daily News

An 80-year-old woman plowed her car into the patio dining area of Gelson's Market this afternoon, critically injuring a man and seriously injuring a mother and her 3-year-old daughter, officials said.

The accident occurred at 1:43 p.m. when a number of people were seated in the dining area at 4738 Laurel Canyon Blvd., said Los Angeles City Fire Department spokeswoman Melissa Kelley.

A man in his fifties was critically injured and taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills. A 35-year-old woman and her daughter were taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

This is unbelievable!! Hopefully everyone is ok. That Drew guy should be a full time editor with that kind of quick response and awesome photos! Keep up the great work guys!

God, I hope that red stuff isn't blood.

A 50-year-old man is in critical condition; a 35-year-old woman and her 3-y.o. daughter are in serious condition.

The driver, reportedly an 89-year-old man is hospitalized in serious condition.

Shades of ol' man Weller / SaMo market crash. scary.

Why would you take people injured in the Valley to USC for emergency care?

Seriously, Greg! Especially when you have St. Jo's out in Burbank. Hell, I'd go to the hospital they use to film Scrubs right there on Riverside before County USC. And I speak from personal experience.

I was the one who took the photos, the "red stuff" is blood but luckily the latest is that all injuties were minor including the man who was trapped beneath the car, whew!

There are people out there that really should not be behind the wheel, young and old.

When my dad was still alive, but suffering from what turned out to be Alzheimer's, my sister and I tried to get his license suspended because of his bad driving. It wasn't set to expire for a couple more years and we were afraid he was going to get in a bad accident before that time.

We were told it wasn't possible unless he got ticketed, or was in an accident. We ended up going down into the garage at his elder-care facility and pulled the distributor wire.

to db - thank you for doing that, i wish there were more people out there like you. you have probably saved some innocent lives.

i'm probably going to have to do the same with my dad one day. he ain't lettin' go of those car keys on his own.

I'm an advocate of issuing licenses selectively, based on a person's demographic. I don't give a damn if it's discriminatory because it is but it is also DANGEROUS to have a 90-year old who can't see or is driving 40 MPH on the freeway. Just like it is dangerous to have a hot-headed 16 year-old behind the wheel. I would LOVE to take these people off the road but you know what? There are no alternatives! Like everyone knows, people NEED to drive in L.A. Build the public transport and save lives already!!! How many more seniors must plow through crowds of people for this to happen?

Unlike the George Weller, the guy who killed 10 people in the Santa Monica Farmers Market a few years ago (and in my opinion did it deliberately), this looks like a legitimate case of pedal error.
