From someone who is on the opposite side of the country, breathing smoke and warching flames ravage. I can't believe that a 20yr old man actually created the disaster in LA...

agree on the community building--I live on Vermont a block south of Los Feliz, and I've never seen so many people out on the streets in the evening. The impromtu get together of hipsters on the steps of OMGC was quite entertaining---I overhead some chick watching a helicopter drop water on the flames say "Thank god...I was wondering when they were going to do something". This was about 9 pm--obviously, the firefighters had done nothing until she happened to glimpse the drop.

That is some quality photojournalism. Keep up the good work LAist...and check out free local video coverage from KCBS here:

www.thenewsroom.com/details/284778/Local

Tons more LA news coverage where that came from and you actually get paid for mashing it to your blog!

These disasters definitely bring people together, at least for the moment. Same thing happened to me after the Northridge quake. Finally got to meet some of my neighbors. Some great photos here. Much better than the useless close-ups of flames that they showed on the news all last night.

I concur that the entire City was brought together - both at the most local level as you describe here and the larger sense as evident by Flickr pools and photo essays from people across the region.

This morning, people wake up and look towards the region's center - Griffith Park - and inhale the soot and share in the common bond of Los Angeles.

Fire brings us together, whether 15 years ago or yesterday.

Disaster is not new to Los Angeles... and we love it!
