Win Tickets to DeVotchka & Saul Williams @ Disney Hall

shadowofstalin.gif

We saw how excited you were over concerts at Disney Hall last month; we're giving away another pair of tickets. This time to Russian Chanson, the Thursday, May 24 concert of the Shadow of Stalin festival:

Join indie-gypsy-rock group DeVotchka and special guests as they explore the compelling and controversial underground musical movement known as the Russian Chanson. With roots in pre-revolutionary, anti-establishment Russia, chanson has evolved as "the soundtrack of contemporary Russia," reflecting imagery of injustice and disappointments of Russian life. The forbidden-but-cherished songs and philosophy of this "second culture" genre will be reinterpreted by the moody and textured Denver band, known for its Grammy-nominated score for Little Miss Sunshine, plus special guest Saul Williams, as they sing of the universal truths of pain, oppression, criminality, and love.

Sound good? To enter, comment below with your name, e-mail (this will not be published) and most importantly, your favorite Russian composer or music group.

Contest ends Friday May 18th, 2007, 11:59 p.m.

In all honesty, after Little Miss Sunshine, I am in love with DeVotchka.

I really like DeVotchka--I got their CD for like $3 and have been a huge fan since--but I also like the weird stylings of Nogu Svelo.

Dmitri Shostakovich

You should quit Stalin and let me go see Devotchka.
Bwahahaha. Oh wait, that was lame.

Well, of course DeVotchka is amazing, and probably my favorite!!

That being said, my friend introduced me to Evgeni Kostitsyn and i have fallen in love with yet another russian composer.

One of the best russian bands is "Bering Strait"...but I sure do love me some Devotchka!

Regina Spektor

Scriabin - some of the piano in Devotchka remind me of his music.

user-pic

Someone beat me to Regina Spektor. :-(

user-pic

Modern day - Regina Spektor. Classic? Tchaikovsky.

user-pic

it's all about the Nutcracker!! Tchaikovsky all the way!!

user-pic

T.A.T.U., in an ironic kind of way.

user-pic

the red elvises. oh, and that dimitri shostakovich guy is pretty good, too.

Igor Stravinsky

user-pic

Modest Mussorgsky.

user-pic

Rachmaninoff (without much originality) on the classical side, Via Gra (without shame) on the pop.

user-pic

I don't know if I've ever really listened to his music but I sure do love to say Shostakovich. Shostakovich...

user-pic

Stravinsky, hands down.

user-pic

DeVotchka is damn fine... but its a toss up between them and TATU...

:)

The Mighty Five group. Well...still it is strange to me, those 5 composers composing together...mostly like the Grim Brothers.
