LAist Hearts UCLA Gymnastics

Tasha Schwikert at the NCAA championships.Due to popular demand after LAist's appearance on Rogan and Simers Squared, we present some additional coverage of the UCLA women's gymnastics team from this weekend's NCAA Championships.

The Bruins finished fourth in the nation, thank in part to a strong performance by Tasha Schwikert (left) who came in second on the uneven bars. She completed a Shaposhnikova to shootover half to handstand, Tkatchev, perfect handstands and a stuck double layout dismount. Lost yet? We're not exactly sure what that means, either, but you can watch this video of her routine from last month.

If nothing else, Schwikert clearly has better balance then we do, nailing this score of 9.9 on the beam. That's nothing compared to teammate Anna Li, who ended up 9th in the nation.

For more details on the results, click here. For pictures, you can check out UCLA's photo gallery. And if you can't get enough of scantily clad UCLA coeds, there's always LAist's (un)coverage of the Undie Run.

T.J., we expect full coverage in the LA Times next year.

Shaposhnikovas' and Tkatchevs' are both release moves--meaning the gymnastics swings and lets go of the bar, usually doing a flip over or under the bar.

Doing casts and shootovers to a complete handstand means the gymnasts were completely on point--anything less is a deduction.

I remember when UCLA had their world class MEN's gymnastic program. Title 9 replaced it with women's rowing. Such a shame.

And being a spectator at nationals this year, UCLA won in a very important category - fashion! Both the prelims and Super Six leos were *excellent* - the back on the prelim leo is to DIE for. Not to mention the event finals leo shown above. Huzzah fabulous gymnasts doing fabulous routines in fabulous leos!

And Dan - ditto on the Men's program. Long live UCLA men's dynasty!
