Dodgers 6, Padres 5 - The Blue Crew spoiled Trevor Hoffman Night in San Diego, smoking the Padres closer for four runs in the ninth. Hoffman was being honored that game for being baseball's career saves leader, but all the Dodgers gave him was a loss. The comback win snapped LA's losing streak at four and put them back into first place in the NL West.
Canucks 2, Ducks 1, 2OT - Anaheim staged a comeback in game one and almost pulled off a repeat performance, but eventually fell in double overtime. For those who forgot how the NHL works, playoff hockey can go on until one team finally scores, unlike the regular season when a short period is followed by a shootout. Jeff Cowan (no relation to the outgoing USC Annenberg Dean) made the winning shot that squeezed in an almost invisible gap between the post and the pads of King's goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere. It was the first OT playoff loss for Giguere, who saved 46 shots throughout the game. The series now heads to Vancouver tied at one apiece.
White Sox 7, Angels 3 - Darin Erstad knew his foe well. After 11 seasons as a Halo, he finally faced off against his former team and went 2-for-4 with a walk, including a clutch go-ahead double. Casey Kotchman hit a homer for Anaheim but Chicago responded with three of their own, leaving the Angels just 1-8 on the road this season. Garret Anderson left in the eighth with a hip injury of unknown severity.
Elsewhere - Saturday is the NFL draft. Unfortunately, LA doesn't have a pick in rounds 1, 2, 3, or any round for that matter. We were almost upset about that, until we realized that the people running the league must be smoking more dope than Reggie Williams ... Sandy Koufax, 71, was picked in the Israeli draft. Yes, the baseball draft ... The Onion sports department hits a home run with Barry haters ... Too bad for Oregon State fans the Onion wasn't the source reporting their new uniforms. Even Oregon can laugh at their in-state rival.
