Where Are They Now - Richard Blade

richard blade is at sirius LA's airwaves have been blessed with legendary personalities over the years - Chick Hearn, Vin Scully, Jim Ladd, and Rodney on the Roq just to name a few. Just as important was Richard Blade who for decades educated LA over KROQ's air by spreading the good news of Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Duran Duran, The Cure and so many of our favorites from the '80s when KROQ ruled the world.

His "Flashback Lunch" hour on 106.7 was one of the best things to hit the noon hour on the local FM dial in years. If only to hear that familiar voice and those golden oldies of the '80s.

In fact if you're old enough you may remember Blade from the short lived music video tv show MV3, or perhaps you remember the cute Karen Scott?

A few weeks ago Star 98 decided to replace Blade, their most recognizable personality, and release him from the 7pm-midnight slot of death.

But if you subscribe to Sirius Satellite radio you can now hear Blade again as he is now the morning host 6am-noon of Sirius' "1st Wave" channel (channel #22) and he can also be heard twice a day on Sirius' "Big '80s" channel (channel #8) doing short features called "Behind The Big '80s".

Here we see him looking impressively young with '80s singer Josie Cotton ("Johnny Are You Queer?") hyping her new cd Invasion Of The B Girls, who also looks great. How do you think they do it?

Anyways it's good to see Sirius take advantage of Clear Channel's huge error.

After the jump check out Richard Blade being Richard Blade way back in the day.

What's unfortunate about those YouTube videos is that they are apparently among the only publicly available clips from MV3, and are just because someone didn't tape over them 25 years ago or so.

it would seem so, Tom. especially in these days of repackaging the Past, you'd think whoever owns the rights to those tapes (if the tapes actually exist) would have been happy to release "live" performances by Oingo Boingo, The Bangles and X in the early '80s.

He was certainly no Freddy Snakeskin or Dusty Street, but thanks for the nostalgia hit.

I started listening to KROQ and Richard Blade back in 1983. I used to rush home from school and watch him on MV3.

I have always thought of Richard as a charismatic person, a wonderful DJ, and all-around great guy.

I was thrilled when he started doing the evening show for Star 98.7. I can't believe they let him go! What idiots!

If I ever get satellite radio, I will make sure to listen to his show!

When Richard Blade's voice left the airwaves on STAR98.7,it was both shocking and sad.His knowledge of the music and artists of the 1980's is amazing. His shows were always fresh as he interjected inside information and breaking music news.I hope he is brought back to southern california radio soon as he is sorely missed.
