Google 411: No Foolin'

goog411.jpgGoogle Voice Local Search, or Google 411 Experimental -- as the robot's greeting would have it -- is live. In Google's ongoing efforts to take over the world, this service is free, no ads and it connects you directly. The Googleplex also managed to push the product live (experimental) less than a month after Microsoft announced their acquisition of voice query software developer TellMe.

It's all computerized on their end, however, with no human backup, so good luck pulling up your fave K-Town bbq spot or awkwardly named Veggie soul food joint. But, that's why we've got Google Maps Mobile set up on our (not even "smart-") cellphone. And there's also 1-800-FREE-411 for ad- and human-supported directory assistance.

well, i tried it, asking for Native Foods in Westwood. the first time, it connected me to "jiu jitsu" in North Hollywood. the second time, i spoke much slower and it correctly connected me. nice.
