Photo Essay: Malibu Creek's Rock Pool

malibucreekrockpool.jpg

It was about time we visited Malibu Creek in Calabasas! 25 miles from Downtown LA or a quick drive from Woodland Hills, this is an LA treasure we must visit much more often. We went in blind, without any research, excited to see this talked about park. Given a map, we looked and found a very short hike to start off with. It had a cool name too: Rock Pool.

Little did we know, hours later we would only be a half mile into the hike and having a blast exploring something new and meeting many extremely cool hikers and climbers along the way. We dressed for a casual hike, came out soaked in fresh creek water and traversed and scrambled many rock walls and boulders. Let us warn you, Rock Pool is not for the dainty hiker. Be a good climber or prepare to get wet when you fall into the stream or decide to swim/wade through parts of the creek to avoid climbs.

What follows after the jump include LA Sheriff's search and rescue waiting to respond, beautiful views and lots of climbing. (Oh yeah, just to let you know, it's $8 to park)

We think this is the famous Planet of the Apes Wall

Please don't snap, please don't snap!

Please don't float away, please don't float away!

Damnit! You floated away! (Because of this, we had to find an alternate route back to mainland. We could have swam, but it was more fun to traverse some more rock that you'll see below in the pictures with the LA Sheriffs)

Okay, so the guy on the left, we called him Spiderman (his name is Kyle). The guy on the right, he fell into the creek. If you want to see LAist climb the same thing with these guys, watch it here on YouTube (sorry, no falling caught on video tape. And anyway, LAist didn't fall, just their friends, hehe)

You have to get wet if you can't, won't or don't want to climb

So the back story here is that a girl psyched herself out so much on the last rock to climb before finishing the hike, she could not go on with it. When we arrived, the Park Ranger yelled across the way asking her questions. He said she could either hike back the way they came (it was 5 pm and they began 9 am that morning) or he could call out a helicopter (inside, our heart pumped. It would be kind of cool to witness a helicopter rescue). Anyway, LA Sheriffs came by from the Search and Rescue Unit, but some savvy climbers helped the girl get across by traversing the rock that you see in the distance of this picture. She said she couldn't swim well either, so choices were slim. She was brave, yet with many yelps of fear, she made it through. Bravo! Bravo!

On the right hand side was pretty hard.

Until next time Rock Pool, stay beautiful!
