Jill Cuniff brought all of her lusciousness (and an old band mate) with her to the Hotel Cafe this past Thursday night. Jill, the ex-singer of the alternative rock group, Luscious Jackson, has recently released her debut solo album, City Beach, and it is wise and poetic and fresh. It has the kind of sound you'd listen to in your apartment and wish you could be driving up the PCH. And if you're driving up the PCH as I was a few days ago, when then, you'd turn up the music and roll down the windows and just let the wind fly in and take you to wherever it is you're headed.

From her opening of "Lazy Girls" to the half-falsetto "Happy Warriors" and the single that first perked us to her style, "NYC Boy," Jill isn't missing a beat with her style or her good grip on her message and what kind of music she is trying to get across. The Hotel Cafe was an excellent pairing, the dim lighting and intimate setting made for a happy, and quite crowded, room.

Her album has been released by indie label, The Militia Group and if you're admiring the artwork, you should, Jill designed the cover art herself. And for us do gooders in the room, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the album go towards the Surfider Foundation.
