Yea citizens, when the cold light of justice turns its unflinching beam on evildoers everywhere, it will no longer shine from a two pound metal club. Ace crimefighters from the LAPD will soon be equipped with a new weapon in the arsenal of righteousness…the Pelican 7060 LED flashlight!
Presented to the public yesterday, the 7060 was developed to specifications set by the LAPD after Chief Bratton banned their standard issue two foot-long metal flashlight. The ban came after a number of reports of misuse were capped by news copter footage in 2004, when a suspect was hammered eleven times with one of these heavy lights. The 7060 is only ten inches long, less than twelve ounces, and has a setting bright enough to temporarily blind suspects.

Another misguided policy to further cripple the hands of crime fighters. As an officer who works mostly at night, my "large metal flashlight" is in my hand to immediately illuminate areas I need light. Currently in the event (which has occured) a bad guy fails to comply with my lawful order and chooses instead to run and then fight, I have the option to strike him in the same manner as a baton which we carry. Now, you take that flashlight away and force officers to carry a plastic light. Officers must drop the little plastic light while running and instead transition to an alternate tool. Well good luck. Officers being injured and bad guys being shot is the result you will see. All the Department needed was a policy that covered the old light not being a "primary" impact weapon but to be used in situations officers were practicably unable to use another tool. Another over reaction by politicians, the Chief, and the media. I wonder why officers are still leaving and we are having such a hard time finding "the best" people for the job. Hmmmmmm.....
