Before we admit to liking Fall Out Boy, we just want to say that the easiest thing in the world to like are the cool things - Sonic Youth, Geto Boys, Iggy, Gwar, The Beasties. But to learn to appreciate something for what it is, and not for the pimply teens who also like it, takes a cultured and courageous critic. Not to mention an honest one.
On paper you should have no problems with this band. There's a fat guy singing, a non-white guy in makeup smiling on bass, and a guitarist and a drummer completely spazzing out. For no reason what so ever they'll spin around in a way we haven't even see children do while playing air guitar. You might call it gay, we call it adorable. And we drink each time they do it, so there's that.
Yes it's pop music, but it's more rock than pop, so where's your gripe? And it's certainly not sticky sweet. Ever. True we have no idea what the guy with the sideburns is singing about but the songs are catchy as hell and there's no bullshit happening in the song other than the guys spinning around, which we have established is acceptable, if not admirable seeing as we haven't had that much energy probably ever.
Then you got the heartthrob guy Pete Wentz. Pete's the one with the makeup and the rumors and the bottomless photos of himself leaked to the interwebs. He's also the one with the clothing line and the imprint record label and the screaming girls after him. Your rockstars should wear makeup, show their wares, make money being creative, and get the girls. So you cant hate him for that. Nor can you hate the fat singer or the spazzes, so again, we shouldn't read any crap in the comments about this band or this contest.
Plus the Academy Is... will be playing, as well as Tucker Max's boy, Paul Wall, so pop in your grillz and stop hatin. Oh and +44 and Cobra Starship will also be there. It's like a modern day minipalooza of teenage lust.
We will give a pair of tickets to the May 2 stop of the Honda Civic Tour featuring Fall Out Boy at the Forum to a random reader who leaves a comment in this post about why they love Fall Out Boy. Deadline is Friday at 4:20pm, so when you leave your comment please put in your real email address where you will be available at 4:30pm on Friday. We will announce the winner at 6pm.
Also if you'd also like to enter the Honda Civic Hybrid in the photo above, click here, and if you'd like to buy tickets to the show, you can do so by clicking here.

"...we shouldn't read any crap in the comments about this band or this contest."
four paragraphs and you never once can bring yourself to actually defend their horrible music, only coming close enough to say its "catchy." A lot of shit's catchy, it just means its catchy shit.
and you failed at explaining why its "horrible".
The reason I love Fall Out Boy is because they have musical talent. I have been a fan since 2003 when I saw them play with Less than Jake. Also, from a straight guy's perspective they are really good performers on stage. Also I can't get the songs from the new cd out of my head. Good stuff!
I love Fall Out Boy because their music IS catchy, has a better message than any other pseudo-rock band out there and they have the sexiest bassist on earth. Who wouldn't love that. Besides their videos are entertaining as well!
I love FOB because Petey is just so hot!
Umm, also, I like teeny bopper music.
i don't love fall out boy, but my 15 year old daughter does, so i am therefore undignifying myself in a public forum to win those gottdamned tickets. christ, ANYTHING to get her off my motherloving back about that accursed show. i am ready to take my own life over here.
xoxo
I love them because I don't understand a word that they're saying and I like my pop music to be as incomprehensible as it is catchy and fun to rock out to, especially when you're drunk.
If you've ever seen those misheard lyrics youtube vidoes, you know what I mean.
And, I have a friend, who actually paid money to be in the fan club, and who even has a membership card.
You can't (well, actually, you can for just $35) buy that kind of devotion.
Plus, Petey is the only guy who wears more eyeliner than me on a consistent basis and for that, he must be applauded, lauded, feted and celebrated. I worship at his eyeliner-y feet.
I like that people abbreviate it to FOB, which is unintentionally hilarious.
And, last but not least, "the fat guy" aka Patrick is my favorite. He's the one singing so incomprehensibly, and thus, I must worship him, also.
***For the record, I am not, nor have I ever been, a fourteen year old pretending to be sixteen.
did you call pete wentz non-white? he's the whitest non-white person i've ever seen.
i like FOB because they would look awesome in fishnets and heels. and still sing well. ish. though i have to say that they annoyed me when they were sound testing while i was trying to teach. But seeing them live would be awesome.
Why do I like Fall Out Boy? Asking myself that question has actually made me stumped. Quite honestly, I want to hate them. They've completely sold out, and they have so many fake fans, any reason for a kid like me to lose interest. After thinking for a little while, I think I've come to this:
They changed my life, for the good and bad. I started questioning everything. I started writing. I started playing music. I started finding out what music really is. I started dreaming. And I started realizing that who I am is really okay.
So maybe they've sold out, or they're stupid, or their music now isn't as good as it was before. But I still remember the day my friend handed me Take This To Your Grave, and my life hasn't been the same since.
If you did your research, you'd know how grounded they really are.
I love Fall Out Boy:
Because they are geniune and real.
Because they're not a band full of jerks.
Because they don't let fame to get their heads.
Because they are unique.
Because they actually are very talented.
Because you can't label them by genre.
Because they don't care what you gotta say about them,
they're still going to make music for their fans.
And mean it.
Because they are the only band that whenever I listen
to any of their CDS, I don't skip any of the songs.
Because they're music is perfect for any situation.
Because their newest videos totally slap the media in the face.
Because I love Patrick's voice and amazing range.
Because Joe is awesome at guitar
and Andy is a mind-blowing drummer.
And because I admire Pete as an amazing writer.
Nobody cares if you hate this band.
Because only the fans know
who they really are
and we love them for it.
We don't love them for the headlines they make.
And they won't be yesterday's news for us
once the popularity fades.
Oh and by the way, don't give me the tickets.
Cause I'm already going.
Just understand.
Fall out boy is highly likable in my book because they've made music into a whole new outlook on life. With all the complexity in the lyrics, it makes me think, unlike some of the new pop songs out there nowadays. They are one of the most energetic and are a new refreshing taste to pop-rock. Obviously, I'm not one of those 12 year old fans who devote their life to Pete, but nonetheless I love the band for more than their good looks. There's nothing more than I would love than to see their energy close-up and personal.
how can you not sing along??
Plain and simply, FOB has a great sound and a funny style. You've got to love the 3 city tour they did in 24 hours, that's an awesome stunt most bands can't pull off.
I love Fall Out Boy because you have to root for the home team even if they start wearing makeup and really tight jeans. And because I made this video with Joe Trohman in '99 before he started doing all those spins. He gets killed 49 seconds in. Enjoy:
I love music... I love fall out boy! They have the talent and the sparks...
head bumpin', fun-lovin' and crowd pleasin'.... total groovin... keeps your body rockin'...
Geniu-Asses...!!! They had fame before fame...
Patrick - the vocalist, who has been living under a rock forever, so he totally eats and breathes ROCK! and it doesn't hurt to be best buddies with Spongebob... who lives in a pineapple under the sea! Cool!
Pete - bassist, he has huge underwear line made of CDs... the total fashion icon! I think Paris and Britney should totally model for him... Everyone should wear CD underwear by Pete!!!
Joe - he was in an movie produced by MTV.. he just changed the color of his hair to black... "Gosh!".. he also has this twirling thing when he plays a guitar... i dunno i think it was named after a condom... trojan?! mania...
Andy - was also in a funny movie.. he played the role of a monk who was in love with a nun.. and he's totally hot on cape and tights... Nacho!!
I love FOB for all the right reasons i never used to be into that sort of 'music'! I used to be the total opposite now FOB music has changed my personality how i dress and how i look, i feel more confident in myself and dont want to follow the crowd i want to be different all the time. FOB arnt just processed shit like some people make them out to be. They started of with not much and have worked to get where they are today! You have to have genuine respect for FOB they are all legends and i thank them for inspiring me!

I've been thinking about this for days, and I think that my love for Fall Out Boy might be better suited to a thesis. But here's the short version. I love Fall Out Boy because, more than any other band that I've encountered, they show a genuine devotion to their fans. They (Pete, really) answer questions that their fans send in to their website, no matter how dumb those questions may seem. They keep their fans updated on important events and often genuinely go out of their ways to treat fans like more than consumers of a product. While many of their fans are 14 year-old girls, there are many like me, who are older and can understand the importance of being appreciated by a musical act about which you care deeply.
In addition to genuinely caring for their fans, they seem like a group of guys who care for each other. They are friends above all else and that shows in interviews and the cohesion of the different parts of their song-writing process. They have each other's backs, whatever trouble or gossip might surround one member.
And Pete, well. He's too open, as opposed to untouchable, and I love that. He uses new media (blogs, etc.) to tell people too much about himself, and the world would be a better place if people could just put themselves out there like that on a regular basis. Maybe you don't care about what he has to say, but he's going to say it anyway, and he knows that other people are going to listen. He's creating a culture in a fascinating new way.
And that's the short version.
I think Courtney should win.
Pete Wentz is sooooooooooooooo HHHOOOTTT!!!
I am in love with Fall Out Boy because nothing in the world makes me laugh quite as hard the responses Pete Wentz gives to fans on the Q&A portion of their website. Their dedication to their true fan base is geniune and something to be admired. I think Pete really does means it when he writes the lyric "we only do it for the scars and stories, not the fame."
So uh, who won? Because I was totally pulling for Courtney.
it was going to be announced today, but noone would believe us, so we're announcing it tomorrow.
