Happenings at the Art School on the Hill

Walt Disney's art school, California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), in the Valencia neighborhood of Santa Clarita has always brought an interesting mix up to the traditionally Republican and white-flight valley north of The Valley. Though, as time progresses, the face of the 4th largest city in LA County grows lefter and more diverse. And CalArts is still seen as some experimental freak show to many (or to those who know nothing, "a basket weaving school").

The school, which fosters an experimental and creative risk-taking environment, cultural diversity and collaboration, just released its first issue of CalArts magazine. At the forefront, the face of the new board which includes Austin Beutner (CO-CEO, Evercore Partners), Manuel Castells (USC), Edwin Catmull (Co-Founder, Pixar; President, Disney Animation), Charmaine Jefferson (Exec. Dir., California African American Museum), Araceli Ruano (Chair, Discovering the Arts [dedicated to this]), Elliot Webb (Exec. VP, ICM) and Kenneth Wong (President, Westfield America Inc.)

Other highlights include an obituary for James Tenney, a profile of the Center for New Performance and an interview with the new Dean of Dance - Stephan Koplowitz.
