Puff the Magic Bratton: Gossip from Last Night's Roast

At last night's 10th Annual Los Angeles Political Roast, a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association, there was more than just poking fun at the no-nonsense East Coast talking LAPD Chief - William Bratton.

The LA Times did not get into it (LAObserved did), but there was a little tiff between Mayor Villaraigosa and District Attorney, Steve Cooley. The DA took a swing at the Mayor's supposed marriage situation and later while Mayor V was roasting Bratton, Cooley would frequently interrupt. Soon thereafter, the Mayor blew back telling Cooley he was not allowed to talk because he was not a funny man.

City Council President and Master of Ceremonies, Eric Garcetti calmed the situation down jokingly comparing their pissy fits to the upcoming Olympics. He also sang a song called "Puff the Magic Bratton."

Of course, there was lots of fun to be had at the expense of ex-Police Chief, Bernard Parks, now a City Councilman. When Chief Bratton was hired under the Jim Hahn administration, there were lots of problems with parks and it wasn't MacArthur Park.

All in all, the in-fighting and good laughs raised almost $600,000 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City. $25,000 was spent on the Krispy Kreme donuts that served as table centerpieces. Okay, not really, but the donut centerpiece cop-joke was apparently confusing to many guests ("I paid how much money to be served donuts?!?").
