@Tod Brilliant
Yes, Apple scored at the very bottom of the GreenPeace survey, but then again, they scored at the top of the survey by one of the mcuh, much more lagit surveys. GreenPeace is just out to get Apple, they have no regard for the envirnment, they just want to get their name in the news, which, I have to admit, they are doing a lot, but only for the bad things. And my iPhone will never make its way into the junkyard, becuase I will have it forever, as a momento, one of the first iPhones ever sold. FUCK GREENPEACE

Maybe the better question to ask is:

Should I junk my perfectly good phone and buy another phone just to stay fashionable? In the process, of course, I'm adding quite a lot of nasty heavy metals to the waste stream, caring very little for the ecological impact of my habits.

Why must we give a shit about new mobile phones? Especially those produced by the computer manufacturer who scored at the VERY BOTTOM of Greenpeace's environmental survey?

People. Wake up. While you're worrying about your new plastic and toxins accessory, the world is burning to the fucking ground. You're going to have to tell your kids that while it burned, you sat on your hands discussing the merits of one phone operating system over the other.

As you read this, FORCE YOURSELF to snap out of it. Right here. Right now. Once and for all.

jim: i don't get paid by anyone except my clients to render an opinion one way or another. so i get to be completely unbiased and just asses things as they are. and, i love apple and have been using their products for over 20 years. that said, i won't recommend something to someone unless its the right thing for them -- even if it is pretty.

david: perhaps the cingular rep you spoke to was more informed than my sources inside cingular, but i doubt it. it doesn't surprise me that you got that story, however. just wait until you actually try to get an iphone as an existing cingular customer and see what happens.

FYI

I am a Cingular customer and there is no preference given to new/existing customers with regard to phone upgrade. As long as your phone is (or I should say contract) eligible for an upgrade you will pay the same price as a new customer. You just need to commit to a two year agreement. You don't have to wait until all the new customers purchase iPhones first. That is a ridiculous ill informed statement.

From reading your column - looks like you are getting paid by iPhone compititors?
You don't seem to know what customer convenience and usability is all about.
