Cat in the Hat Turns 50; Dylan Hears a Who

happy 50th birthday cat in the hat seussFriday was the 50th birthday of Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat. A few area schools honored the occasion with special events including the release of "THE SEUSS IS LOOSE!: Young Lil' Hats, Writing All That," at The Watts Learning Center charter school. Cabrillo Elementary in Hawthorne went all out for the good doc with a Read-a-Thon and a Green Eggs and Ham Cookoff, and the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library served birthday cake while hat-wearing kids made a "Seuss-a-rific!" paper sculpture.

It's not too late to get in on the action -- for every Seuss book purchased through May 1, Random House will donate one book to the First Book national book bank and literacy program. If you're under 18, you can send the Cat in the Hat a birthday e-card via his Web site and a book will also be donated to First Book. More details here.

Our favorite discovery -- for Seuss fans of all ages -- is the brilliantly produced "Dylan Hears a Who" project, which mashes up the classic works of Ted Geisel and Robert Zimmerman. You can listen/download all seven songs free of charge right here. Or listen to "Green Eggs and Ham" by pressing the play button below:
