LAst Night's Action: Lots Of It
Kings 4, Ducks 3, OT - LAist revels in rivalries, especially local ones. Take Los Angeles and Anaheim. Despite gaining parity in baseball and cartoon production, they've seen a major gap in hockey. The Kings are at the bottom of the Western Conference standings, while the Ducks have spent most of the season on top. Yet when the teams face off, that doesn't mean a thing. Los Angeles won in overtime, giving them three wins and four losses this season against their Southern California rivals. Each game has been decided by just one goal, and the Kings are looking to tie up the season series when they go head-to-head for one last time on March 18. If they don't succeed, there's always next year. Instead of going to the (former) Pond, they'll cross the pond and play the first two regular season games against each other in London as a part of a new NHL experiment. You know, playing hockey in a country where nobody cares.
Sonics 77, Clippers 75 - The Clippers are starting to feel all of those injuries. They fell to Seattle, who got 31 of their 77 points from Rashard Lewis.
Baseball - OK, so it's just the preseason, but baseball is back! We love a game where 49 players get involved, even if it's a 7-2 Dodger loss to Atlanta ... The Angeles beat Kansas City 7-6. Outfielder Gary Matthews Jr., currently under investigation for using human growth hormone, debuted for the Halos by going 0-2 ... Earlier we told you about Tommy Lasorda's alleged extracurricular interests. Now, he's not even putting up a fight.
College Hoops - UCLA beat Washington State 53-45 to officially clinch the Pac 10 regular season crown ... USC fell to Washington 85-70 and will probably yo-yo back out of the top 25 unless they can punish Washington State in their final game.
LA Marathon - Check out LAist's Guide To The Marathon to get ready for this Sunday ... The LA Times is starting to put some resources into their coverage, too ... Apparently some local politicos thought race officials were taking them for a ride on the free metro deal. No word if anybody was told to go for a 26.2 mile run off a 26 mile pier.
Elsewhere - The Lakers fined Vlad-Rad half a million bucks for breaking his contract and getting injured in a snowboarding accident. He was relieved not to have the entire contract canceled. Since he's making $30.2 million in six years, we think he can shoulder the burden ... Los Angeles officials hosted the US Olympic Committee to show off the city's splendor and land the right to bid on the 2016 Olympics on behalf of the good ol' US of A. Guests were treated to a movie called "Why Los Angeles?" made by Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney. We can't wait for that to show up on YouTube.
