Happy LILY ALLENtines Day! - Lily Allen @ The Henry Fonda Theater, 2/5

Teeming with dolled-up jailbait and smelling like a fraternity house basement, The Music Box at The Henry Fonda Theater was ground zero for trendy sneakers, ballet flats and perky ponytails on February 5th as Lily Allen played a sold-out show at the only LA stop on her MTV-sponsored “Discover and Download” tour. Her album Alright, Still dropped domestically one week prior, and had already taken the #20 spot on the Billboard 200, selling over 34,000 copies of her sassy, neo-ska, rasta pop.

Cute as a button and cheeky as the dickens, Lily Allen took the stage promptly at 10:15pm diva-time, wearing a flowy white ensemble, like a polished, nouveau Stevie Nicks, and quickly bewitched the crowd with her locked, hypnotic stares that seemed to say “You think you’re watching me, but really I’m watching you.” Her casual mannerisms, however, made the show a relaxed affair, seeming more like a house party than a tour date. A house party, that is, with a tremendous backing band that included a three piece brass section, funked-out bass, guitar, keys, drums, and a Whack-a-Mole type soundboard that Ms. Allen would smack occasionally to make siren noises and such.

Flashing her pretty, privileged, pearly whites, and sporting a one-sided Princess Leia hairdo, the rumored “next face of Chanel” sang and strutted to her offbeat hits with conviction, confidence and humor. “LDN” started the show with a venue wide sing-a-long. “Littlest Things” sounded a lot like Heart’s “Alone” and Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature,” and an acoustic 2fer cover-medley of Keane’s “Everybody’s Changing” and The Kooks’ “Naïve” was a well-executed lowkey turn from an upbeat set.

Preferring her own songs, she doubled back for “Absolutely Nothing,” dedicating it to GWBush and company, and delivering it as a lovely, ambient, Morcheeba-reminiscent croon. Even exhausted, she appeared to be enjoying herself -- with a detached enthusiasm -- the same way a teenager will not admit to having fun while there is an adult in the room. Clearly the music lacks passion, but I believe that is the point -- a charming and entertaining yet blasé romp through a day in the life.

Her set was accented with stabs at bankers, mortgage lenders, Kate Moss clones and the small penised. “Everything’s Just Wonderful,” (which alternately could be called, “Please Go Fuck Yourself”) sounded delightfully like Space Invaders meets Brazilian smooth jazz in an elevator, and the final encore “Alfie” was every bit the clownish, stoner-circus you hear on the album.

Lily Allen has recently been named as one of the headliners of this year’s Bonnaroo Festival, along with The Police and The Flaming Lips.
