It all started with talk of Posh & Becks moving to Los Angeles. Then it was about Posh and the Spice Girls and their horrible videos. The conversation turned to boy bands of the same era (give or take) and their horrendous videos that often seemed sexually, well, questionable. LAist has now officially laughed ourselves silly watching these old videos and have to share them with you. They have a certain, "this can't possibly be for real" quality to them. So each day this week at lunch we are sharing a boy band classic video with you.
Today we give you Westlife. Why do boy bands do so many covers and do them so badly? It was a really tough call between "Uptown Girl" and "The Rose." Messing with Bette Midler deserves attention but that one was just a bit too sappy. The gag reflex you'll feel imagining the royalties Billy Joel gets off this version of his song means our work here is done. Who dances like that really? Tell us.
A special shout out to Claudia Schiffer for her guest appearance. Westlife must have been big in Germany because otherwise we just don't get it. And why being an "uptown girl" means dressing like you're going to a funeral is something we might need translated.

I think I threw up in my mouth a little.
How pathetic? I'm imagining the people who run this site are insanely jealous of how handsome the guys in Westlife are; how fantastic their voices and harmonies are; and how rich they are. Why else would you slag a song that's as good as the original--a song that helped raise money for a charity--that has an equally innocuous video. In fact, it's a great bit of fun, and Claudia wouldn't have to be paid much, as Westlife is the biggest boy band in the world--only trailing Elvis & the Beatles for Number 1 singles.
why pick on westlife??? westlife have 14 number 1's. plus uptown girl was for charity and the rose went to number 1 as well so they cant be that bad....
cant believe ur acutally slating the biggest selling boyband and most sussessful of the 21st century!! jus because you dont like them doesnt mean thei millions of fans all over the world dont!! the have been ot for over 7 years now and are more in demand than ever. Ther love stage shows are spectacular and you can tell alot of hard work had went into it!! One little pointer for you, in N. ireland 1 in every 10 people has been to a westlife concert!! fact!!Yea they mite have done a few covers in their time, but the have made them their own, ther new album, "te love album" has proved this, beating the beatles, oasis and u2 in the uk album charts outsling them all!! ha!
Who writer are you? 'UPTOWN GIRL' is one of the most amazing songs and singles from WESTLIFE. THEY'RE THE GREATEST BOYBAND IN THIS UNIVERSE ALIVE... Their covers are much greater than the original.
'THE ROSE' from WESTLIFE has been choosen to be my aunt's wedding. Everyday I love them...

They have been together 9 years and your saying they ruin covers ! there is nothing wrong with doing cover versions !! and if they are so shite why do they get to number one most of the time !!! this song was recorded for comic relif and it served its purpose i'm sure. the only reason westlife do covers is normally under the request of Simon Cowell, so it is not there fault and besides that they always do them better then the original singers any way.
I find it very strange that someone that doesnt like Westlife takes time out of their life to slag them off. If you dont like them, why even think about them, theres loads of bands that i dont like but i wouldnt waste any of my time slagging them off. Theres just no point! Whoever wrote this clearly just leads a sad and lonely life and pretty much needs to get out more.
If Westlife didn't exist and released covers, some of us wouldn't know what the hell "The Rose" sounded like.
It was Westlife who brought a new spark to an original. I listened and compared the vocals of the original and Westlife's version of "Uptown Girl". Gosh, no offense, but Billy Joel's version was... horrible. Westlife's video is more fun to watch than Billy Joel's.
Now, why don't you sit down and get yourself a life? Because you're not going anywhere by slagging Westlife off. Coz no matter what you say and do, the Westlife fans are going to beat you in telling people how good Westlife are. You just shut your mouth and stop slagging artists you don't like.

theres not 1 person i kno that doesnt like westlife so y dnt u jus shut ur face. if u dnt like westlife then fair enough but there r millions of ppl all over the world who love them as much as i do. n all there fans aint really bothered bout wot u think anyway.
