LA City Council Offers $50,000 Reward in Charupha Wongwisetsiri Case

A few days before Christmas, 9-year-old Charupha Wongwisetsiri of Angelino Heights was hit in the head with a stray bullet while she was in the kitchen of her home with her mother.

Two alleged gang members were taken into custody but were later freed. So the City Council, in an effort to persuade anyone who has any information on the person who killed Wongwisetsiri announced yesterday that they are offering a $50k reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case.

The DA said that they had to release Cesar Zamora and Steven Castanon for several reasons including the fact that the murder weapon has yet to be recovered. Plus if anyone claims to have seen either of the men fire a gun on that day, there are already witnesses that say they saw another man pull a gun on Zamora and Castanon, thus they would claim self-defense.

Still, the DA does not consider this a closed case, and neither does the City Council, thus the reward.

The twist in this tragic case is that the party that the council is throwing $50,000 after, the one who allegedly provoked the self-defense gunfire that killed the little girl, fled having never gotten a round out of his weapon, which reportedly jammed after he brandished it.

Self-defense or not, that these two men were not even charged with so much as a weapons violation such as unlawful discharge or possession is reprehensible.
