Danielson, the Coolest Indie Rocker You'll Meet Who Sings About Jesus

Danielson is a really good movie

"Danielson: A Family Movie"
Laemmle Grande 4-Plex, 345 Figueroa Street, Downtown LA
special engagement, showing thru Thursday

You're doing ok when you've got Steve Albini inviting you to a rock festival that he's curating.

You're doing ok when you're straightforwardly hurling your Christian agenda on a cynical young hipster crowd and they can only stand and watch and smile, in awe, and think of David Byrne and Frank Black, and how the Polyphonic Spree wasn't so creepy after all.

Geniuses are a rare breed and the jury is still out in the case of Daniel Smith who inspired Sufjan Stevens to be just what he was meant to be. Likewise, the documentary about Smith is also out and it's totally good.

Because when you have a guy leave your show and identify himself -- believably -- as someone who plays in a metal band, and who is scared by Daniel "Danielson" Smith, you are doing something perfect

A film about a close-knit family of young people who were born to two very religious and musical parents, "Danielson: A Family Movie", follows four years of Daniel leading his brothers, sisters, and friends, through three different incarnations of musical groups. All weird. All intriguing. All amazingly creative.

Definitely off-beat, curious, and wonderful. So much so that after the jump check out a video of one of Danielson's songs and the trailer for the film...
