Dream A Little Dream Of Denny Doherty

Denny Doherty, 66, of the 1960s, electo-folk foursome The Mamas & The Papas, died Friday at his home near Toronto. He suffered from kidney problems and was put on dialysis after surgery last month.

As a member of The Mamas and the Papas, his contributions helped shape and spread the image of a golden, glowing, free-love, psychedelic, California lifestyle. Their music was rich with harmony and vocal precision, and maintained a laid-back, natural feel. The combination of folk styling and rock sentiment produced a vibrant yet soothing sound that continues to resonate, ever relaxing, with nostalgic clarity.

Doherty went on to produce an off-Broadway musical about the band, as well as host a popular children’s show called Theodore Tugboat.
