Hip Hop Heroes of January '07

eggs.jpg With the start of a new year, it only makes sense for us to reflect on the events of the past year. Last year marked the deaths of two legendary hip hop figures, J Dilla and DJ Dusk, and the proclamation that hip hop, too, is dead. In 2007 we need to ask ourselves, is Nas just starting a controversy, or is hip hop really dead? Well, I can’t answer that for you. I can, however, list four of my hip hop heroes for January 2007. Not that these are actual heroes, but just a few people that will surely make me smile throughout the coming month:

Wrestling Hero – Kevin Federline
Despite a quite comical marriage and a predictable breakup that was long past due, K-Fed has invaded the homes of America through TV appearances and his debut rap album. If that was not bad enough, K-Fed is lined up to face John Cena for a third time on the New Year’s Day edition of WWE RAW.

Fashion Hero – Acrylick
Acrylick has graced the backs of many of LA’s finest. Creating clothes that makes a statement, ranging from “Peace, Love, Hip Hop,” to “Drop Beats, Not Bombs.” Check out Acrylick.net for the entire collection.

Rock Hero – Lexicon
Jumping back into the spotlight with the long awaited 2006 release of The Rapstars EP, Lexicon is kicking off 2007 on a mission. Lexicon will join up with Concerts for a Cause for a Breast Cancer benefit party, in which all proceeds will go to The National Breast Cancer Coalition. The concert was scheduled at the Key Club Hollywood on January11, but check out Lexicon to an ear and eye out for updated concert info.

Sanctified Hero – Headzup Fellowship
Headzup Fellowship is a ministry reaching out to the hip hop community in the LA area. Meeting every Sunday evening at 7pm at 12055 Wicks St. in Sun Valley, Headzup is out to show the world that you don’t have to be a heathen to be into hip hop.
