A.M. News: Fed Cash, Green Goodness, OIS & MTA

Sunrise in the San Fernando Valley

Daily News tells tales of earmarked federal funding to go to the wayside in the Valley due to Democrats going lean on the budget. Of course, it won't be just the Valley. Watch out basin/metropolitan LA.

The California Report looks into the future of rest stops along California's highways. Coffee vendors, farmer's markets, solar power, wifi and more. (Download Audio Here)

Closer to home, Art Center College of Design's downtown campus's roof is green.

The Holidays are not good for criminals with weapons or pretend weapons. A Valley Traffic Division (VTD) Officer shot and killed a man after a 15-minute pursuit when the assailant pulled an object and pointed it like a gun at the officer. It was a spark plug socket. The end of the pursuit was broadcast live on the local news.

Acronym of the day: OIS (Officer Involved Shooting).

Finally! MTA's Transit Access Pass (you know those TAP Here boxes?) is explained: "Prepaid 'smart cards' would provide access to buses and trains from 11 regional agencies."

Aha! I have been wondering what the mysterious "TAP Here" boxes were all about! Except -- maybe I was skimming or just not caffeinated enough -- but I don't understand how it saves time if you still need a paper ticket for security? For example, about once a month you get ticket-checked by random security guards. Will they (like the bus drivers) have some kind of electronic tap reader for every passenger? Or do you still show your paper ticket?

And if you pay by credit card will the MTA be tracking you *and* saving that information? How will that information be used? How long will it be saved?

And if you walk past a TAP machine at the Red Line and don't have a TAP pass, will an alarm sound? Who will monitor it? Even now, there's almost never security present, except for the rare random ticket search.

I still cannot believe Los Angeles has a metro that runs on the honor system.
